Thank you cards to teachers-is this OK?

Ds has finished year 11, and if all goes well, will not be going back to the same school. He wants to send thank you cards to a couple of teachers. I suggested that he sent a general card to the staff room, but he doesn't want to do that- he wants to thank these teachers specifically. Is that OK? It is, isn't it? i don't know why I'm doubting it......

Totally fine!

Acopyofacopy · 01/07/2017 10:09

Of course that's ok! It doesn't happen very often and a personal card will be very much appreciated!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/07/2017 10:30

As a secondary teacher, it makes my day when that happens. Well, my year really. We get very very little by way of thanks from parents or kids, and when it does happen, it's very much appreciated. And it will be very meaningful to those teachers that your DS has chosen to thank them specifically: it suggests that he is aware of the fact that for him, they have "gone the extra mile" in some way, and for a teenager to pick up on that is special for us as teachers.

I have NEVER been known to shed a tear when given a card or gift, oh no...Blush

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2017 10:34

Thank you! I was just feeling a bit sad for the other teachers, that's all!

Oh well, I took in a giant cake on the first day of exams-I hope they all got a bit of that..........

No, individual cards much, much better. A card in our staff room would be missed by everyone, we are a big school and lots of teaches never use the room anyway.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2017 10:38

The other teachers won't know, and will be well-used to getting bog-all from their students.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 01/07/2017 10:38

Why don't you write a card for all the staff saying thanks as a parent? (More staff might see that than managed to get some of the cake)

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2017 10:42

Or you could, as a parent, email your thanks to his teachers while he does a card for his favourites.

PotatoPrint · 01/07/2017 10:43

individual cards much better.

We had communal stuff in the station but no one ever really knows who brings it in!

Much much better to do some individual cards to teachers they've appreciated. I still have a box of mine!

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2017 10:44

I was going to write to the head highlighting a couple of things I think the school did exceptionally well over the exam period and asking her to pass on my thanks to the rest of the staff......

We have individual subject area team rooms and we do get tubs of chocolates labelled "To the Slicing Naice ham department, thanks for being the best teachers in the school". They may send them to everyone though!

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2017 10:49

Actually, noblegiraffe, I wish I could have sent you cake as well -you've been incredibly helpful over the exam period too!

In our school, our head would forward an email like that to the whole staff and it would be very much appreciated.

WRT your DS, I got cards from eight of my lovely Y11 class and I treasure them. The fact that they took the time at such a stressful time for them to write me really personal appreciations is incredibly touching. I loved the boxes of chocs too, but the cards were the best thing.

Eolian · 01/07/2017 10:52

Individual cards from ds to teachers and letter to the head from you - both great and will be very much appreciated. Teachers are often quite overwhelmed and verging on tearful (in a good way) when they receive really heartfelt thank yous from pupils.

PotatoPrint · 01/07/2017 11:03

A general letter to the head is lovely and I'm sure appreciated. Our general ones got a mention in staff briefing.

But a specific card is treasured by all teachers I know! Difference between thanking the company and thanking the person. Not at all required but lovely.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2017 11:51

Aw thanks Bertrand! :)

All I got from my Y11 parents over the exam period was a spurious complaint. Hmm

TeenAndTween · 01/07/2017 12:15

DD did cards for her teacher when she left and a mini box of chocolates for each. I did wine for every GCSE teacher once we got her results, as they had all gone above and beyond for her.

PlaymobilPirate · 01/07/2017 12:16

Yes! I teach 16+ and treasure any cards!

AtiaoftheJulii · 01/07/2017 13:02

Ds in same position - don't think he cares about sending cards, but I'm sending cards (and gifts - a bottle of wine or chocolates should be fairly universally acceptable?) to the ones who have kept him in one piece and me sane over the last year and a half.

turtletum · 01/07/2017 13:07

Im a secondary teacher. Definitely personal cards. It means so much to get a lovely note written inside a card. By all means email the Head with general thanks too. Several kids have just verbally thanked me after exams, and this is also very appreciated. Its nice to know my efforts have been valued.

physicskate · 02/07/2017 10:41

I have a box with all the little cards from pupils that I have ever received. I bring it out and have a look through on really bad days...

Cards are still appreciated many years on!!

DecisionTree · 11/07/2017 11:29

I wrote an email to DS y7 form teacher who has been amazing.
