Hi,
I've just bee nice checking out a few sixth form colleges for dd for next year once she finishes her GCSEs.

Her current school has its own sixth form but the school is all over the place at the moment and dd just wants to go somewhere new.

I was just reading about a local sixth form which is also a 4-18 school in our next city....state mainstream school.

However, in the sixth for many section, there is a link to info about sixth form bursaries. I clicked on it and and it said there may be an opportunity for students doing full time courses, to apply for a bursary.

I thought education in England was free to up to age 18?
Anyone know what it means?

A bursary is a means tested payment to students for attending further education. It's up to individual schools how they assess them but usually it's if a child is on free school meals, parents earn less than £25,000 a year or receive working tax credits. Ask the college for their eligibility criteria.

It's money that a recipient can put towards travel, books, equipment, trips etc

Oh I see.
That's ok then.
We don't need one for travel etc.
I just suddenly thought that maybe something that form colleges wasn't free anymore.
Thanks.

It is free. But students from low income households may struggle with travel costs (which LEAs no longer support) so they have a hardship fund for such students. (EMA used to pay travel etc but has been abolished in England. Thanks Govn...)
