New grammars?

Surely new grammars are dead?

Let's hope this is the death knell!

noblegiraffe · 09/06/2017 06:44

Hurrah! No way they can push them through now, they needed a majority of 30 and they were TM's baby so no one else cares.

Best news ever.

ParadiseCity · 09/06/2017 06:46

I'm really really hoping so Grin

MaisyPops · 09/06/2017 06:47

Hopefully.

All I want is for whoever gets in to fund ALL schools correctly.

HPFA · 09/06/2017 06:54

Most people reckoned that TM couldn't get it through the Commons with a majority of 17. So hard to see how it could be done now.

I am angry beyond belief that this idiotic woman, in the wake of national upheaval, which was a symptom of massive division in our society, then spent huge money not on sorting out regional and rural jobs and economy, but straight in there with the Grammars Green Paper. Which was never made public, and which she declared she would over ride because she wasn't interested in evidence.

Grammars: cream off the few. Spend money on Grammars and leave the rest under resourced. We saw the education spending plans, how was it going to be different?

What a distraction.

Awful, awful woman.

The wonderful Laura McInerney:

Does this mean I can start celebrating?

While I'm still very worried about how my dd's comp will be damaged by cuts/teacher shortages, at least this is hopefully going to be one less thing to worry about. We are in a fully comp county (Surrey.) I've been so impressed with dd's school and i really didn't want it and other comps to be turned into a secondary modern while money was squandered on new grammars which may have drawn even more teachers away.

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2017 10:00

Phew.

goodbyestranger · 09/06/2017 10:17

Can't imagine that grammar expansion will be high on this morning's agenda. Overall result probably very good for general funding.

noblegiraffe · 09/06/2017 10:20

Grammar schools was Nick Timothy's idea and he has been revealed to be an almighty bellend who has lost the Tories their government. He was also behind the dementia tax. No one will touch this now. It barely got coverage in the election as it was.

Frankley · 09/06/2017 10:25

So pleased Theresa May did not get what she wanted! Thought of more Grammars was really depressing me. Do hope this kills the idea and the money that would have been put into starting them up is put into making true Comprehensive Schools better.

goodbyestranger · 09/06/2017 10:25

No, I don't quite see how mathematically it can now be pushed through.

goodbyestranger · 09/06/2017 10:27

More funding generally would be nice, also a second EU referendum.

HangingRock · 09/06/2017 10:29

Yes that would be good

user1489830224 · 09/06/2017 10:55

Yippee! Proves you can't just "tell" us what will be done to our schools and NHS. She'll have to listen now surely. She'll be dizzy from having to change direction on so many policies!

HPFA · 09/06/2017 12:38

Ed Dorrell and TES are sure that new grammars are dead, with a "succinct" comment from unknown source.

Is that true that it might end the national funding formula like it says in that article? Does that mean there won't be the cuts or not?

noblegiraffe · 09/06/2017 13:46

If there will probably be another election soon, they'd do well to avoid obvious vote losers.

HangingRock · 09/06/2017 16:15

So you think they won't make cuts?

HangingRock · 09/06/2017 16:16

So you think they won't make cuts?

HangingRock · 09/06/2017 16:16

Sorry not sure why that posted twice

goodbyestranger · 09/06/2017 18:28

A national funding formula isn't making cuts so much as redistributing the pot. The old method of distribution was also very unpopular. If Theresa May wants to get approval ratings up she needs to find more money to put in the pot - the method of distribution is less important. Perhaps she should adopt some of Labour's very popular policies re. Corporation Tax etc :)

goodbyestranger · 09/06/2017 18:30

ie not so magic money tree.

HangingRock · 09/06/2017 19:48

I thought the vast majority of schools were facing cuts though regardless of it being redistributed?
