How do you get your children to revise? My ds is in grammar school but can't be bothered, he has sets exams coming up for the following year and won't do any revision as "he's on holiday" (half term) he's only in year 7, obviously I have told him to, explained the importance, asked him doesn't he want to better himself, but I am getting nowhere!

Just read the post down further, maybe I should cut him some slack and leave him to his own devices.

Ime you can't really make them revise. He probably has no idea how to revise tbh, and end of year tests are there to help him start to learn how.

A good starting point might be to get him to find or make a list of topics that will be tested for each subject. Then he could go through the list with you and explain whether he understands each topic.

I think it's quite hard to get most 12 year olds to think about future consequences, maybe just make sure he knows it's a horrible feeling to sit in an exam and not be able to answer the questions!

Let him have his half-term without having arguments about revision. It is meant to be a holiday!

Does he do his homework? Will he revise during term time?

DD also Y7 and first lots of end of year grammar school exams so I sympathise. On the Tuesday she had friends round for a study day. We agreed breaks, a walk out and at the end ice cream on production of a revision plan and highlighting areas they need to work on. School has been really good in teaching them how to revise. DD's notes have three tick boxes - confident, looked over second time, checked day before exam. I think kicking it off with friends really helped, they did have some time to just chill too.

It is better to learn lessons now, start off in lower sets and work his way up, then to mess up at GCSE/A level when it matters.
