Y11 PARENTS: GCSE pass grade lowered to a 4

In a last minute government u-turn, the government has announced that instead of a 4 being required to not resit maths and English for the first 2 years of the new GCSEs, it will be the requirement for the future too, it will never be raised to a 5.

They have also declared that the grade 4 will be called a 'standard pass' and the 5 a 'strong pass'.

This has huge implications for sixth form entry requirements and resits as some had already raised the bar to a 5 in anticipation. It also means that there will be less confusion in the future as DC compare for jobs against future cohorts as the resit requirements will remain the same.

It's a bit of a shame if you get to a situation where a pupil with say 667778888 is deemed 'not good enough' to do A levels.
But I guess with some schools it may be more about making their A level results look stellar, whilst not advertising quite how many of their own pupils are weeded out.

Yes, it is a selective independent which currently gets 79% A*, but shifting the threshold from A to 8 doesn't seem at all in line with the Ofqual equivalence guidelines

Point about harder A levels is interesting , maybe that is a factor

Goodness I wish this would all go away!

I think so too...

I realise that this thread is a few weeks old but I didn't know this and it has made me so happy. DS is only Y7 but I really can't imagine he could get a 5 in English, hopefully he'll achieve a 4!
