Private v grammar

We face an emotional dilemma! Our eldest son has been offered a place at a great grammar school which is far but has convenient transport link. He has now also been offered a full scholarship at a great selective private school too which is closet in distance but not so convenient a journey. But that's by the by as the more important issue we have is that we have 2 other children that would benefit from the sibling link to grammar school. We could pay for the other 2 to attend the same private school but seems pointless when they stand a chance to get into the grammar school. Money that could be put to something else. Is it worth letting our son go private in spite of the above hurdles?

I honestly don't know now! We submitted an app for bursary but it wasn't considered when we last left it.

Given that they said last week that we would receive a full scholarship for our son.

I'm assuming your comment is in relation to whether the offer is conditional? We did think of the effect on our son with the pressure and expectation of a scholarship. We will find out more on Friday what that woild mean practically for him.

I might be completely wrong then. Well done to your ds anyway.

Thank you all for your kind words and comments. We are proud of our son and trust his choice...fingers crossed!!!!

We turned down scholarship to Habs for a brilliant, partially selective secondary with free sibling places. Paid for great holidays, never regretted it.

Are you sure the school are offering a fee-free scholarship to your DS? That 'full scholarship' means 'no fees at all' and 'no expensive add-ons'?

Your DS is the one that has earned both these offers - by his ability and hard work. I do not think he should have his choice compromised by the opportunities for his siblings. They have their own chance to get into the grammar school / get a scholarship - and may, anyway, prefer the school that all their friends go to. Which if it is a good comp is fine.
