My ds's maths teacher has just told me that the 7000 odd schools that did the new maths GCSE as mocks recently achieved a modal score of 11% for paper 1. 11% ? Surely not!!!!!! Shock

My son is doing edexcel maths higher paper and for his mocks he got a 4 and his target is 7 but needs a solid 6 to get into 6 form. What are the grade boundries for maths this summer out of 240 how much does he need to get a 6. He's started doing pass papers gets 35/80 on each paper sometimes 40 please can anyone help?

BertrandRussell · 24/02/2017 09:24

Have a look at the video I linked to at 10.26 yesterday, see if that helps. Loads of people did much worse than expected in the mocks.......

Iirc 40/50% last year was a C? so a pass. A 7 is roughly an A so he would need to be getting around 70%

very happy to be corrected if wrong!!

BertrandRussell · 24/02/2017 09:32

I don't think the final grade boundaries have been published yet- but the guy in the video I linked to has gathered together a lot of info and is pretty confident about his predictions..........

ah intereseting thanks bertrand

does anyone know what is happening with IGCSE

Witchend · 24/02/2017 09:42

That's roughly the grade boundaries dd1's school gave. I think they were given 90% for a level 9 though.

They've obviously done really well in the mocks, which I hadn't appreciated. A couple from her set have full marks, and the majority were getting 75%+ in all the papers.

I'm surprised because I know they spent last year doing statistics so they've only been working at the new GCSE from September.
The second set was doing pretty much as well as they have been working towards it since year 10.
Bog standard comprehensive.

Thank u very much for all ur advice much appreciated Smile

Is a '5' effectively a fail? equivalent to a D grade?
DS really struggles, (he's year 10 but has to take a humanity and a language this year) his overall predicted grade across year 10/11 is a '5.8'.
I was lead to believe a 5 was a C equivalent by his school.

educatingarti · 24/02/2017 09:54

A 5 is a high C or low B in old money.

No a 5 is a 'good' pass (high C /low B in old grades).
Only a 4 is needed to not retake at 6th form.

TeenAndTween · 24/02/2017 10:05

Xpost. Sorry, hadn't refreshed whilst doing times tables with DD2!

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2017 10:13

The bloody government have totally messed things up haven't they?

A 5 is a good pass, for this year and for the future. It will be the pass grade for the league tables.

However the government doesn't want to overwhelm 6th forms with huge numbers of pupils having to resit, so they've said that for the first couple of years they will not require a compulsory resit in 6th form if you get a 4. However, a 4 is not a good pass. Some 6th forms and colleges have decided that because this will disadvantage pupils in the future because they don't have a good pass and weren't given the opportunity to have another go, they are requiring students with a 4 to resit anyway.

I suspect kids who get a 4 and who are left to it will end up having to resit at some point in the future, to get jobs, as they won't meet the 'good pass in maths and English' requirement.

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2017 10:14

I will reiterate because it is important that people understand the implications: a 4 is not a good pass. Not for this year or any year.

And no employer 5 years on is going to say "Now this 4 in maths-was it while 4 was still a good pass or not?"

OP posts:
multivac · 24/02/2017 13:58

This puts it clearly, I think; confirming noble's point, above, about there being no leeway in accountability terms regarding a 'good pass'. It will be a 5, from this year and thereafter.

BertrandRussell · 24/02/2017 14:17

Is there anywhere we can see an overview of the results of december mocks? Ds said they were shown some graphs of the results nationally.

OP posts:
Fleurdelise · 24/02/2017 17:08

So bottom line, DS got 62 marks and got marked at a 4. I can see Bertrand saying a kid in her dcs class was marked at a 6 with 26 marks. What is the reality? I am so confused...Sad

PossumInAPearTree · 24/02/2017 17:13

Sixth forms round here (decent ones ) -
Are saying kids won't be allowed in unless they get a 5 for maths and English, even if the kids aren't wanting to do maths or English a level. Which seems harsh when it's a pass and equivalent to a C which in previous years would have let them in. Maybe they'll change their mind after results day!

PossumInAPearTree · 24/02/2017 17:14

Sorry, meant harsh when a 4 is a pass and equivalent to a C.

BertrandRussell · 24/02/2017 17:19

Well obviously that's ridiculous-62 marks out of 80 is about 80% isn't it ? (Maths not my strong point!) which is an 8!

And the 26 being a 6 is equally ridiculous- that's about 30%, which is nearly a 4.

I don't understand!

OP posts:
titchy · 24/02/2017 17:25

62 out of what fleur? Was that on one paper (out of 80) or a combined total for all three (so out of 240)?

BertrandRussell · 24/02/2017 17:37

Ah. If it's over all three papers then that is a 4. That makes sense.
