Sending home from school

Our Secondary School's new head has had a clampdown on uniform, which in itself is not for me a problem. The issue I have is how it is being implemented. On arrival at school the kids are made to line up in the street outside the school gates where they are inspected and any child not adhering to the standards are immediately sent home. My problem with this is that many of the children travel long very distances to the school and are being sent home without their parents being informed. The Head claims that because the kids haven't entered the school gates they are not reponsible for the kids. Does anyone know if this is correct? This is a big issue as a few years ago a child died while out of school. (Parents thought he was in school. School assumed he was off sick, which resulted in school always contacting parents about detentions, sending home, non appearance etc.) Also the people doing the "inspections" are not teachers merely support staff. The kids find their decisions arbitary and inconsistant, with "easy" students who's parents will not cause trouble being singled out. I feel if they are going to send home kids, that the Head should be the person deciding this but do not know if this is a legal requirement. Can anyone advise?

BTW To clarify: my child has not been sent home but parents' have been given an opportunity to meet the head in person and when I do I want to raise my concerns in a fair and reasoned manner.

What a load of nonsense.

Get on with teaching ffs. There must be very some actual issues to deal with. Bullying, behaviour, lesson planning etc

Niblegiraffe

If they don't have the correct uniform they won't go back will they, not to get sent home again.

Funny we gripe that state schools are worse than independents, that there is no discipline etc etc. Then we moan when a head takes firm action to maintain standards that are high and in line with many independents.
The black rucksack thing - mine had to have designated PE bags, designated socks, designated swimming costumes. A standardised uniform is quite normal in the 'top' schools. I personally suspect no great cause and effect but it does teach children to conform to societal norms.
The return home thing - parents are aware this is the rule. They can see what their children are wearing so they need to take responsibility and get their children to school in correct uniform. No reason to blame anyone but parent and child.
High risk - for secondary school children? Really? They need to grow up and take responsibility at some time.

How does a secondary aged child who is perfectly capable of getting themselves to and from school independently suddenly become endangered when an extra journey is added to the mix?

The head is not called Mr Fox is he, Frami ?

Presumably cos they may not have the money to get home again or get back.

I don't think wandering the streets with nowhere to go freezing their tits off is the best use of their time

Which is why students aren't routinely sent home to do that, and if it happened at this school it was an error that was rectified.

Thanks for all the imput. I had a question which is answered and has been raised at the school meeting last night. Transpires the head did not mean his rules to be interpreted as they have been and now kids will be kept in focus room as under the previous regime. He is currently having to commute long distances and cannot be in school to oversea this himself so he was unaware of the issues.
As for bags apparently that has also been over enthusiastically applied and any dark bag will be permitted and may be carried on the arm, back or across the body.
