Maths homework help - pretty please

Quite happy for everyone to think I am thick. But tbf, I am shite at maths and I'm struggling to help DD.

On Tue she had a maths sheet to do for homework. 20 questions.

It was 'peer marked' today and she's got two wrong. Homework tonight is to find out the answers of any that were wrong, get them right and to set 5 more examples (with correct answers). She has no idea how to do them, neither do I, and Google is just confusing me.

The questions are:

Solve:
? : 44 = 2 : 22

and

? : 14 = 5 : 2

I am baffled. We have tears and strops and I can't be doing with this.

Please can anyone help? (preferably in words of less than 2 syllables). I will be eternally grateful

The first one:
The 22 has been doubled to make the 44, so you'd do the same with the 2, making it 4.

The second one:
(I think)
Times the 2 by 7 to get you 14, so times the 5 by 7, to get 35.

They are ratios.

Whayever you do to one number, you do to the other.

So in eg 1

to turn 22 into 44, you multiply by 2.
So you now need to multiply the other number by 2
2 x 2 = 4

4:44 = 2:22

In eg2

To turn 2 into 14 you mulitply by 7
So multiply 5 by 7

5 x 7 =35

35:14 = 5:2

Thats right, its about keeping the same ratios.

So if you had a ratio of say 2 girls to every 22 boys (2:22), if you had 44 boys how many girls would you have (so you've got twice as many boys (2x22) so you need twice as many girls (2x2)?

It works! The boys to girls thing made us both understand. So her first 'make up your own' example is:

A class has 3 boys to every 9 girls. If there are 45 girls how many boys are there:

? : 45 = 3 : 9

With an answer of 15

Yes, apart from I'd word it slightly differently and say:

In a class the ratio of boys to girls is 3:9. If there are 45 girls, how many are boys?
