Secondary schools without uniform

user1475931634 · 08/10/2016 14:05

I am trying to establish if there is a secondary school not too far from where we live which has no uniform. My son has tactile hypersensitivity so can't wear uniform, but otherwise is fine with mainstream education. We've been told that there are no schools without uniform in Cheshire West where we live, so are looking at Cheshire East, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire and North Wales. Does anyone know how I can find out what's out there? Thanks

It is very unusual, I think. I've been a teacher for over 20 years in several parts of the country and have never even known of a local secondary school with no uniform. Good luck - I hope you find one.

PotteringAlong · 08/10/2016 14:08

I'd be amazed if there were any at all. You could try contacting the local education authorities but they won't have details of the academies.

In fact, a quick Google just has suggested that there are no state secondary schools in the U.K. Without uniform. Apparently private Montessori secondary schools doing if that's an option?

Imsickofnamechanging · 08/10/2016 14:13

I know an independent school like that but not in your area.

dancemom · 08/10/2016 14:19

I know of 2 state secondaries in Scotland that have no uniform so there definitely are some!

mary21 · 08/10/2016 14:21

Fortismere in London, not much use to you,
Also I think Camden school for girls both state

coragreta · 08/10/2016 14:23

I work at a state secondary with no uniform and there are two others in the local area.
Not close to you OP though I'm afraid. But they do exist.

historyismything · 08/10/2016 14:26

I'm north Staffordshire, so not too far from you and non here!

Bluepowder · 08/10/2016 14:30

Could he go and just not wear uniform? My dd's comprehensive is uniformed, but they make many different accommodations for all kinds of needs and pupils are also very accepting. Would your local school be able to adapt?

AndNowItsSeven · 08/10/2016 14:30

your ds should be able to attend his local school not wearing uniform.

TeenAndTween · 08/10/2016 14:33

Would you be better off trying to find a school nearby with a polo/sweatshirt uniform rather than blazer and tie, and then seeing how flexible they will be?
Assuming you can get a GP/consultants letter to back you up, surely the school has to make 'reasonable adjustments'?

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 08/10/2016 14:34

What clothes does he wear? Did his primary have any sort of uniform?

The secondaries near me have uniform, but some of them are fairly relaxed about it - polo shirt and sweat shirt from the school, and any brand of trousers and shoes as long as they're black and not too tight. Might well get away with something like track-suit bottoms for a good reason, and although the tops are logoed, he might get permission to get similar-coloured ones in preferred fabric, especially for the one underneath.

so perhaps you could look at the level of strictness in the uniforms. They're not necessarily all blazers and ties and proper shirts and scratchy official trousers.

aginghippy · 08/10/2016 14:39

If he has a recognised condition, he should be able to go to his local school and wear different clothes as an accommodation for his special needs. Maybe try speaking to the SEN team of your local council.

mary21 · 08/10/2016 14:47

Cherwell Oxford, Anthony Gell Derbyshire?

Balletgirlmum · 08/10/2016 14:51

Definatly non in North Staffs & I'm almost certain there are none in Cheshire either.

He should be allowed certain adjustments though eg uniform colours but different fabrics.

Even the autism specialist school in Church Lawton has a uniform.

gallicgirl · 08/10/2016 15:02

There's a school in Milton Keynes that doesn't have uniform but no use to OP.

Hopefully there is a solution locally for you.

user1475931634 · 08/10/2016 15:08

Thanks guys - I saw the one in Derbyshire and I think that may be the closest! His school have offered flexibility but he doesn't want to stand out and it's the trousers that are the biggest issue. I'll keep looking!

Glasgow and Edinburgh both have a state school with no uniform and where the parents fight any attempt to introduce one, and by the way both have standards that rival the private schools with their blazer and kilt uniforms. Doesn't answer your question but they do exist.

LockedOutOfMN · 08/10/2016 22:04

Not near to you OP but I do know 3 secondary state schools in North London that don't have uniform.

I hope you can find a happy solution for your soon, good luck.

TheFrendo · 09/10/2016 22:54

Probably too far, but www.anthonygell.co.uk/ in Wirksworth, Derbyshire has no uniform.
