Last year dd's school offered two different options for school dinners; 'bistro' which was chips, baked beans, jacket potato, pizza, pasta and 'home cooking' which was an actual real meal like lasagne or chicken casserole.
This year, dd tells me that there is no home cooking now only bistro. She is disappointed as she always chose home cooking, I am disappointed as the bistro offering is basically pure refined carbohydrates and she has come home absolutely starving every night so far.
I know that a very high percentage of the students will have always chosen bistro options and they are very cheap to produce. But is it unreasonable to expect schools to ensure that students at least have the option to choose real food over processed food?
We can avoid processed foods at home but dd doesn't want to take a packed lunch as none of her friends have one and you have to sit separately in another hall if you're having packed lunch. I'm pretty disappointed that parents haven't even been informed of this change either. Is this kind of catering standard at secondary?
