Re-take English Language if you passed Literature?

Does anyone have a definitive answer on whether a student has to re-take English Language GCSE (below C) if they have passed English Literature (at least a C)? I thought I read that it could be either, but a friend's DS has been told that he has to re-do English Language even though he has English Literature.

Many thanks

It is Maths and English Language which are the normal minimum requirement. Either achieved below a C will need retaking at level 2/GCSE, but this can be alongside another course.

Definitive answer is that the government does not require a resit for the sixth form condition of funding if the student got a C in literature.

However a college may have their own requirements.

I would want to get a minimum of a B really in English to allow all options for future careeers (eg. RAF/)teaching )

catslife · 01/09/2016 16:43

RedHelen Can you supply any evidence that grade Bs are needed for these careers please?
I have checked UCAS and for ITT the minimum requirement still seems to be grade Cs for English and Maths (and Science for primary age group).
I wonder whether this is for future uni entrance rather than sixth form.

RedHelenB · 03/09/2016 13:33

Yes, I do mean for uni. I think it unfair but they seem to have upped a c grade to a B grade in say maths to enter the RAF officer route. Also, with primary teaching. I think getting a grade higher than the minimum would be good insurance for the future.

LadyPenelope68 · 05/09/2016 19:49

If they are wanting to go into Prinary Teaching then they will have to have the C in English Language, not in literature.

Bitofacow · 05/09/2016 19:53

Individual colleges can and do insist on a C in language.

Many professions nursing, childcare etc insist on a C in language.
A level 3 apprenticeship would insist on a C in language.
Anyone considering refusing a resit would be very, very foolish.

Very.

timeforabrewnow · 05/09/2016 20:05

Sorry, how foolish?

Longlost10 · 05/09/2016 20:09

There is no "definitive" answer, it depends who you are applying to and when, you might be able to get away with just having English literature in for some courses in some institutions, in some circumstances, but there is absolutely no guarantee, ever, and you would be seriously disadvantaged competing against candidates that have English language. As a previous poster said, you would have to be incredibly stupid to turn down the opportunity of a resit.

Bitofacow · 05/09/2016 21:33

Timeforabrewnow, longlost has upped my "very foolish" to an "incredibly stupid" , let's see if we can get better than that.
