Hi everyone, wondering if anyone can explain my 12yo school grades. If I'm reading it right he's done really badly in just about everything Sad Can anyone help?

Year 7 grades / targets?

I'm not sure how your school is assessing them.
My daughter is just finishing Year 7 and her report this week shows that the average level is 7a. They also comment on their progress as things like 'below expectation', 'expected' and 'above expected'.
For instance in Maths her final level was 9C, which was 'above expected' and in her English she was 8a for Reading and 8C for writing.
She surpassed her personal target in 8 subjects and was 'expected' in the others - things like DT and ICT.
Not sure if this helps....

This report is total bs. What are the school playing at? You can't grade a Y7 student on a GCSE scale. They haven't even taught him GCSE topics yet.

He's maxed out in effort and behaviour, that's all you need to know. It would have been better if they skipped summative grades entirely rather than generate this unholy mess.

ANd this is Nicky Morgan's legacy. Abolishing national curriculum levels, without replacing them, leaving schools to sort out their own way of assessing on a rushed through policy of new GCSEs.
Yes, I'm a teacher, probably won't be for much longer and this is the reason why. I can't deal with all of this change for change sake and not for the good of our students.
I would always look at the effort grades. That's what counts. I tell my students this, and parents. It might be worth mentioning to the school that there is a great deal of confusion over these new grades and could they please clarify.

OP, did you manage to get an explanation on the grades?

LockedOutOfMN · 19/07/2016 17:17

Others have commented already and are no doubt much more insightful and articulate than me, but as a secondary school teacher, I am amazed - and delighted - that your son has A for effort and behaviour in ALL subjects. Wow! That is absolutely brilliant in itself, whatever his grades are. Year 7 is the start of a very long journey but with this consistently positive attitude I feel sure he will improve enormously over the years. Well done to him for all of those A grades.

Hi can you say which secondary school is your child going to?

JBothma · 19/07/2019 13:50

Your son got an absolute stunning report. They have really set the bar very high for him, which would have been done on the basis of his SATS results as well as the assessments they did at the beginning of the year. DO not worry about whether it is a 1 or a 2, focus on the target they set him and whether he has achieved it or not.
You can be proud of his report and give him the praise he deserves for always doing his best and always behaving. Remember it is not always the grades that count. Until they get to Year 9 / 10 depending on schools will this only start to matter as for now it is just a way of tracking their progress and whether they have met target or not. DO NOT compare it to the GCSE framework as they are not doing GCSE work yet. Don't be hard on yourself or him, enjoy the summer holidays.

I think the school has set his year 7 targets massively high - this could be because he did so well in primary. My daughter is in year 7 in grammar school - she got 120 for both english and maths in her year 6 SATs - but her targets for end of year 8 are 4s as is the targets for the others in her class. Her scores for the end of year 7 are very close to what you son achieved. He has a great report - just unrealistic year 7 targets.

Hello all ,
I wanted to ask what is the grading system for 2019 ..my son is in year 7 and recently he got his first term report.
He s placed in a.EL3+ group

Any idea what does this mean ??

TeenPlusTwenties · 08/11/2019 14:12

Zunera You should probably start your own thread, but there isn't universal grading / reporting at secondary, so what it means is probably anyone's guess.
Anyway, if you start your own thread with info on all columns in the report, and perhaps what he got for his SATs, you may find people can deduce it for you.

Or ask the school.
