HELP !! Surrey Secondary Independent Schools - Dyslexia Friendly

Does anyone have any recommendations for boys or co-ed day secondary schools that are supportive towards dyslexia and that have great sports facilities?

My son is in year 5 at an independent prep school in Surrey and his dyslexia was picked up just over a year ago - so pretty late and we are playing catch up. He's not performing well at school and his CATs scores were low due to no allowances for his slow processing speed...

From his ed psychologist evaluation - he's got a very high verbal and visual intelligence but very low processing speed and working memory and has the potential to do well subject to overcoming these challenges and finding a way that works for him.

We'd be interested in schools like St Johns', Leatherhead or Reeds in Cobham (we are attracted to these because of the sports facilities as our son is a great all round sportsman). Our current school is strongly advising against them and has seemingly written him off based on current performance. The only suggestions we have been given are boarding options or day schools an hour or more away which don't work logistically. Desperately don't want him to board!

Do all schools really only select children on the basis of exam performance and CAT scores? Both of which are possibly not a true reflection of potential in this instance?

Kingswood House School in Epsom has an excellent study centre with specialist staff who will support your son with dyslexia. They now go up to Year 11. It is an excellent, nurturing school and every boy thrives there.

you need to be guided by your head. I have a non sporty son, with some SEN issues which is impacting his day to day performance at school but v high CAT scores and reeds, Epsom and St. John's are being suggested. The profile of these schools are changing. St. John's have lower entrance requirements for those with SEN, but if it's a decent head your prep wil know best.

All schools should be able to cope with dyslexia.

Cranleigh, KEW, Halliford, St James' are all good schools if you are looking for more pastoral/less academic.

Hi
Not sure anyone is still reading this post from last year but we are in exactly the same position. DS has mild/moderate dyslexia and we don't want him to board, also want a school that his brother can attend. Are considering Seaford College and Halliford and Claremont Fan and would be very interested to hear if any of you have chosen the school or even started there yet. Added trouble for us we need to move house but I am struggling with moving even more urban than we are now. Would be good to hear from anyone who has made the move to secondary and how and DS find it.

Hallo #timeforsomethingnew
Really interested to read your message as this is the situation we are currently in, DS in Y6 at primary (although DS in state primary not prep). But sporty child, bright with mild/moderate dyslexia.
We are thinking realistically Halliford or Seaford would be good for him (and maybe Claremont) but he is now starting to become anxious as ALL his friends seem to be discussing is where they are going and our choices are not the same as theirs. Hating seeing him deflated and anxious like this as it is not how he usually is.
Where did your DS go in the end and how is he, and you, finding it? I'd be really grateful to know. Added issue we need to move as growing out of house size so it's all a bit dependent on schools...quite anxious times.
