Non selective secondary independent schools

I am looking for an independent secondary school for son aged 14 struggling in current state school. Not sure if he would get through rigorous independent exams but he doesn't have Sen just needs a push to see him through. I'm also considering state boarding schools but not really sure if the quality of education/academics of these schools as I feel I've been let down by the system.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Where do you live?

I don't know too much about state boarding schools but have heard good things about Cranbrook and Holyport College.

Assume from another post you are SE London.
What about Thames Christian college Battersea/Clapham. or Cedars Croyden
Or Boarding Seaford College. pet worth.

Most schools will want to know what your dc is capable of and where his talents lie.

The following are ones where I've known young men who are charming but not nec v academic, iyswim. By no means stupid, but talents lie elsewhere.

The son of a friend went to Sackville, in Kent, so doable from SE London, which was small, unthreatening, but didn't I think do 6 th form, and she didn't think pushed enough.

Royal Russell might be another option?

Not sure what Emmanuel is like now?

There's a Steiner a School in Chartham, I think, if you like the Steiner way of doing things.

14 - currently in year 9 or year 10?

Portland Place School in central London might be worth a look.

Emanuel has become much more academic over the past three or four years now requiring a higher pass mark at 11+ for the eldest (or only) child. Siblings will be admitted with a lower pass mark because Emanuel likes to be a "family" school. That takes priority over the league tables.

They may also be flexible if a child is very talented in music or sport.

There is also St Dunstan's in Catford.
