So who the hell DID get past the 1st round for Henrietta Barnett this year?

Of the 14 girls who tried this year form my dd's State Primary, only one, with 2 tutors a week- 1 for English, 1 for Maths, zero extra - curricular, and 0 involvement in School Council etc, got through.
So anyone know some one who did?

Me

but that was ...oooh....18 years ago

Thanks for the reply, Fillyjonk, but it was this year I was curious about...! I suspect the typical student profile has changed since your day.No longer is it exclusively local girls who take part in this lottery but, in these league-table-driven times, girls from far and wide e.g Brighton (will stay with Granny weekdays).
Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, I believe there has not always been a 2-stage wheat- from -chaff process starting with a NVR test. Whilst arguably more egalitarian, by virtue of being non-culture specific, I feel it discriminates in favour of the more mathematically-inclined. In so doing it denies those who, though exceptionally bright in their own way, are of artistic bent the chance of a good education of which they are no less deserving

I am surprised you know so soon.
Last year we found out who had passed in november but had to wait until March for allocation
Are they the NVR and VR tests?
They test IQ - I think children who have qualities in areas other than straight academic often fail to thrive in these schools

oh I know, notapushy1, i just saw the school name in the title and had to post.

back in the day...there was a nvr paper, a maths paper, an english paper, 2 interviews, involving further nvr, parents interviewed by the head (this may also have involved some nvr ). there were around 1200 applicants for 90 places, as I recall. Most people were tutored, and continued to be throughout their years there. I wasn't though.

Oh and catchment area...there were certainly girls there from all over north london. I lived in camden. but yes, I don't remember anyone being from brighton. thats excessive.

its a very academic school (I do still have contacts in london-don't think its hugely changed!). Tbh, if your dd is artistic, its unlikely to be a good school for her, IMO. When I was there the following departments were utterly, unreservadly rubbish: drama, all art, and music. And sports were pretty rubbish also. It was a very very narrowly academic school.

And certainly when I was there, despite being pretty competative to get in and so on, the teaching was not fantastic. those great gcse results (they aren't that great, considering the intake) are the result largely of lots of kids having tutors (I know this cos I have friends in london who tutor for HBS)

anyway.

I take it your daughter didn't get in? please don't be upset. Its really not the greatest school in the world. If she goes to the local comprehensive (I assume you are in barnet? I don't know their comprehensives that well) but has supportive, interested parents, I'm sure she will do much better.

I find that statistic very sad, if it is a local primary school.

I remember reading that a child failed the exam for South Hampstead High because their writing was deemed too immature (around 15 years ago). They have so many applicants, they are just looking for reasons to reject them, really.

lol

I got a scholarship to south hampstead

my handwwriting must have been ace

NotAnOtter · 10/01/2007 20:03

i think they are multiple choice now

Fillyjonk · 11/01/2007 06:55

well that would have been me screwed

christywhisty · 20/01/2007 19:09

My friend looked round Henrietta Barnet last year and was told unless her daughter was extremely gifted it was not worth applying.
