How much for further math tuition?

I'm being quoted £60 for 1.5 hours for FM for GCSE (he's taking GCSEs summer 2017).

It works out at £40 an hour but the tutor apparently tutors in 1.5 hour blocks.

Is this similar to what you pay if you pay for tutoring?

Thanks

I'm in south London and pay £25 an hour for Higher GCSE Maths

Look at the website tutor hunt

FartyTette · 26/03/2016 14:27

We are in Yorkshire - paid £25 per hour + travelling (which was about £3).

Rojak · 26/03/2016 14:52

I'm in the north and I expected the price I'd been quoted to be similar to London prices.

You're likely to have to pay a premium for further maths tuition because not many teachers have taught it.

maydancer · 26/03/2016 17:42

I was quoted £40 per hour for maths STEP tuition (Yorkshire) .We did not take it up!!

maydancer · 26/03/2016 17:43

GCSE FM is pretty much A level Core 1.So you should be charged at A level rates

noblegiraffe · 26/03/2016 17:48

There's overlap with C1, but they're not the same, you definitely want someone familiar with the course.

Rojak · 26/03/2016 17:53

Thank-you - useful to know - yes i've checked the tutor is familiar with currículum but also asked around and prices here seem to be between £30 - £35 / hr

Two years ago when I was tutoring I would have charged you £45 for 90 minutes, plus another £15 if you wanted me to come to you. South east, not London.

Look at MyTutorWeb. It's an online service that matches students with university students, and quite a lot do further maths. Between £20 -25 per hour. You do need decent broadband speed though as it's like a Skype service.

any further math tutor to recommend?

KateEduConsult · 08/02/2022 17:06

I'm a science tutor in London but I charge £55-65/hr GCSE - A Level. I think a lot of rates can depend on whether the tutor is a qualified teacher or not/background + experience. I was previously Deputy Head of Science at a school in London and an outstanding teacher so I set my rate based on competitive rates in London and what I can offer in terms of expertise. There are lots of tutors that don't have this type of background and might then charge slightly less. I do lots of work outside of the session to prepare and gather together bespoke resources for every student, in that way it's much more than 1 hours work. Hope that's helpful for info re rates!

There are tutors and tutors. I'd expect to pay bw £40 and £50/hr for a trained teacher w knowledge of the syllabus, mark schemes etc and £20-£30/hr for, say, a maths graduate.

Depends on the child and what they need, and what you want to achieve. If they need someone weekly to just go over what they're learning in school, bit more time, practise etc get a cheaper tutor eg uni maths student.
If they have big gaps in key principles then yeah you need an expensive experienced teacher though you can expect to need fewer sessions.
If I were you I'd get an expensive one initially to get them up to speed with where they should be at this stage in the year. Then get a cheap person to keep them on track from now on.

Most kids entered for GCSE further maths should be those expected to get a 8 or 9 grade at the standard maths GCSE. I would not be paying for tutoring for any of this. These kids usually go onto do A level maths and further maths. Save your money for then

Research private local tutors online on tutor directory websites. I hired a French tutor via tutorhunt last year, I fork out each week. She is quite good however. One hour lesson each week via Zoom at the moment.
I get some homework too. Read the reviews, check qualifications and insist on seeing a few references and proof of a recent DBS check as well. Good lick and I hope you are able to find someone who can help your child progress. Do not worry about the prices too much, money should not be your only concern when choosing a tutor.
Ooh I did not realise this is a zombie thread- my bad.
