Entry for GCSE exam - is this right?

DS is in yr 11 and has started applications for colleges. He asked school for his UPN no. to quote on an application and was told that he didn't have one as registration has not been done yet. Is this correct? I would have thought they would have done this by now and am a bit concerned by this.

No, it's fine - exam entries aren't done for another couple of months (I think igcse entries are the earliest, at the end of jan). This is because schools have to finalise who is being entered for what and on what tier, a decision best left until a bit further into year 11.

A UPN is a Unique Pupil Number and is normally issued on admission to primary school. It stays with a child for their whole school career. It has nothing to do with exam entrance and the school should have been able to provide it without difficulty.

Are you sure they have asked for UPN and not ULN? While the school will have had the UPN for years, they may not yet have registered their year 11s for ULN yet. The ULN is usually the one colleges ask for. You can always write 'to be advised later.'
