Graveney 6th form

Visited Graveney 6th form open evening last night and was very impressed with efficiency of dealing with such huge numbers & had a lovely guide who really did school proud. Results are also very impressive.
However I was left cold by the talk ( admitted we were last group ) which felt very sterile & forced, exasperated by 2 student speeches that could have been carbon copies of Alleyns or any other private school. Not what I wanted or expected from a S London state school !
Has anyone experienced moving from a smaller state school to what seems almost a 6 th form college ( 750 6th form ) ? How easy is it to integrate , make friends , get to know teachers & does it favour its own cohort ? Thanks for any thoughts Smile

LL did they hand out the GCSE results at the open evening? We were hoping to get there but school drama overran and we couldn't make it. Can you point me to the results please? Thanks!

I can't remember the exact stats but very impressive, 80% plus for A-C Eng / Maths. Also just received another outstanding OFSTED report. If going for yr 7 would def give a go. We are thinking of moving for 6th form where decision not so cut & dry Hmm

Hi, my dd (now at Uni) and ds (in Year 12 and one of the guides on the evening you visited) was/is at Graveney. I cannot praise it enough, it is a brilliant school and I know well pupils in all the 4 different streams. It is your choice and you know your child best but in my extensive experience of it and other schools I would recommend it thoroughly - is a wonderful, inspiring, professional and most of all human place, full of committed teachers.

to answer you actual question (sorry) the newcomers settle in very quickly, it is true that the school is v popular with existing pupils, but they still need to get the grades and I know of a number who didn't get a place this year.

"very impressive, 80% plus for A-C Eng / Maths"

More than 25% of the intake is super-selective. Graveney has the equivalent of 2 super-selective -ability classes in addition to the top sets that would reflect the general population in the are on distance, so it's what would be expected, rather than impressive, perhaps.

I'm not saying it's not a good school it is, but you have to look at the stats in context, and not compare them with a 'true comp'.

I was hoping for a breakdown of results by subject........? Anyone?

BrendaFlange · 26/10/2015 18:12

I have never seen a breakdown of results by subject, for any school.

I would like to!

Would the school give you the results for the subjects you are interested in?

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 26/10/2015 18:31

We got a very detailed breakdown of results at the open evening- numbers of pupils sitting each subject, numbers of A*s, As, Bs etc

I'm sure the school would let you have the figures if they're not on the website

janinlondon · 27/10/2015 10:26

Thanks Noitsnot. That's what I was hoping for - but no response to my email request as yet! I can use 2014 I guess. Brenda, you can find the data here:

www.education.gov.uk/schools/performance/download_data.html

janinlondon · 27/10/2015 10:42

Under this link in the website:

2014 16-18 qualification and subject level results

Additional information on the data underlying the 2014 performance tables is provided in the excel file 201416-18UnderlyingDataInstitution_Level.

The data in the file shows institution-level information on examination entries by subject and grade for a range of academic and vocational level 3 qualifications, including A levels, AS levels, the International Baccalaureate, Pre-Us, BTECs and vocationally related qualifications. Information is provided for students aged 16-18 who were at the end of their advanced level studies in the 2013/14 academic year.

BrendaFlange · 27/10/2015 18:25

Thank you - I didn't realise such detailed data was available.

janinlondon · 28/10/2015 09:04

Lots of schools wont release it Brenda - takes some digging to find it!
