School uniform - different for boys/girls

DS's school is considering changes to its school uniform.

One of the main change would be a change from boys and girls essentially wearing the same uniform to girls and boys having separate uniforms.

So boys would wear, blazer, tie, shirt, trousers
Girls would wear, fitted jacket, open necked blouse, trousers/skirt

They haven't really given any reasons as to why girls and boys will be expected to wear different things. My gut feeling is that the children shouldn't be discriminated on on the grounds of gender (can just see the boys moaning that the girls don't have to wear ties). And specifically that fitted jackets only suit a certain body shape and are not ideal as a compulsory school uniform item.

But I may just be being precious ... wondered what others though if your DC's schools do similar?

The school my son goes to has blazers, ties and skirts or trousers in a choice of blue or black, although they have to match. In theory it's the same for boys and girls, in practice the boys wear black and the girls blue. There's no discrimination as it's down to choice, but it does mean it's a pain as you can't pass uniform down between siblings of different genders.

In your case, I think while the lack of tie slightly favours the girls, it is an accurate reflection of the working world.

I hate ties on girls, I think they look utterly ridiculous so I wouldn't have a problem with that at all! It sounds similar to my brother's children's school ... the girls have a fitted blazer & blouse (usually worn with a kilt though they can wear trousers) & the boys have a blazer with shirt & tie.

My dd's school have a choice of black or blue uniform too (I wonder if it is the same one!), the boys exclusively choose black & the girls mostly blue though dd is trying to start a trend for black ... The girls generally (particularly in the older years) wear fitted blazers or blazer looking jackets - they look far better than the horrid square blazers the boys have (though they are more expensive). They also wear fitted shirts with 3/4 length sleeves rather than they long sleeved boxy ones the boys wear but dd would be much happier if they could wear blouses without ties.

DCs school had ties for all.
They signified all sorts of things so made the blazers marginally eater.

One school near here has different colour blazers for the boys and girls
but still blazers and ties for all

Sleeve length should be left up to the kids if they keep their blazers on all the time

What is a fitted jacked if not a girl's blazer?

What is a fitted jacked if not a girl's blazer?

it is a blazer that won't actually "fit" half the girls, but unlike adults won't be able to shop around to find one that does actually fit.

At DS2's school the girls wear opened necked blouses and no ties, the boys wear ties.
Both wear blazers but different fit for boys and girls.

myotherusernameisbetter · 07/10/2015 18:39

In ours the uniform is essentially the same but in practice it does vary a bit.

Both wear white shirt and tie but the girls do tend to wear more fitted blouse type shirts as long as they have a collar that a tie can be worn with then style/sleeve length is varied. Boys can wear short or long sleeved shirts, Boys wear black trousers and shoes and girls can wear a choice of trousers or skirts as long as they are black then anything is fine (Not jeans though) with black shoes. Both wear the same colour blazers but the girls style is shorter, no flaps and is more fitted. Boys more boxy with double back flap.

They have a choice of v neck sweaters, v neck cardigans and v necked sleeveless sweaters but they are not obliged to wear any (DS1 never wears one and DS2 always wears one). Haven't noticed anyone with the sleeveless on but mostly the boys wear the jumpers with some wearing the cardigans and girls mostly wear the cardigans but some wear the sweaters.

Depends how fitted the jackets are. I wouldn't be happy with really tight fitted jackets. However, DD1's school has slightly different blazers for boys and girls - the girls' ones are cut with a slight waist, have two buttons instead of three and don't have vents at the back. I didn't even notice until my friend's son came over one day. She's a bit miffed, because she can't hand his old blazer down to his sister.

Our girls uniform is open necked shirts with a logo on the collar and boys wear collar and tie. I think the vast majority of girls are relieved they don't have to wear a tie and it looks very smart. HOWEVER, the girls' blouses are really expensive because of the logo and they also have a regulation skirt whereas boys have plain black trousers. DD1 likes wearing trousers, thankfully, so I haven't had to shell out for the skirt, but the girls' uniform is still quite a bit more expensive than the boys', which is something worth keeping an eye out for.

Ds's school has fitted jackets & open neck shirts for girls. The jackets look far nicer & suit more girls shapes than the old Blazers. Dd wishes her uniform was like that.

Ds has to wear a regulation suit which is also nice.

I think one reason for a change is that in the work place girls are unlikely to wear a tie.

For decades girls' uniform has basically been boys' uniform with the option of a skirt. This sends a subliminal message that boys are more important than girls, that girls have been allowed in to a boys' learning environment.

Brioche201 · 10/10/2015 14:56

male and female clothes button up opposite ways!
Blazers are different styles too.Boys ones have vents in the back whereas girl's blazers don't.
