Shakespeare Monologue for 12 yr old girl

Wonder if anyone can suggest one? Dd has joined a drama group and they have been asked to find a monologue that appeals to them and do a bit of research into what it's all about.
Obviously, there are the Romeo and Juliet ones, Hamlet etc, I had a look and thought Joan of Arc (Henry 6 I think) might be OK as it's short, straightforward and obviously someone the kids know about already.

Anything else that would be suitable? Thanks!

I'd stick with Juliet for a 12 year old - it's the one she's most likely to be able to relate to, and that's important for this sort of thing.

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 27/09/2015 13:37

that speech from Macbeth - you know
"Is this a dagger I see before me/its handle towards my hand/come let me clutch thee/I have thee not yet I see thee still" etc etc

(still remember it after learning it as a child)

What about Portia's Qualitly of Mercy speech from Merchat of Venice? I remember doing it at school and enjoying it at 13.

WingMirrorSpider · 27/09/2015 13:40

*Merchant

Sunshineandsilverbirch · 27/09/2015 13:41

Cordelia from King Lear?

Northernlurker · 27/09/2015 13:41

I would suggest maybe Portia's speech on the quality of mercy or if she feels like something different what about Mark Antony's speech - Friends, romans, countrymen etc? I learnt that at age and I love that. You can do a lot with it and the context is really interesting www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/247644

JassyRadlett · 27/09/2015 14:08

I immediately thought of Portia as well.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 27/09/2015 14:35

Thanks for those, will take a look with her later! (She doesn't want snogging or boys, so mercy or death sounds quite attractive to her!)

Lady Macbeths speech - Act 1 scene 5.

tribpot · 27/09/2015 14:44

It doesn't have to be a monologue by a female character, presumably? She could look at the Queen Mab speech from R&J, although I would go for the Juliet one where she is trying to decide whether to take the poison.

PiqueABoo · 27/09/2015 14:48

"... who might be your mother.."? Cross-dressed Rosalind caustically ripping into snotty Phoebe? What's not to like? Grin Well besides the length...

Greenteandchives · 27/09/2015 14:53

What about the fairy's speech in AMND? Over hill, over dale etc? That would suit a 12 y o.

customercare · 27/09/2015 15:07

How long is a monologue. What about the speech made by one of the three witches in MacBeth?

BoskyCat · 27/09/2015 15:14

I love where Rosalind decides to dress as a boy, it's short but:
ROSALIND
Were it not better,
Because that I am more than common tall,
That I did suit me all points like a man?
A gallant curtal-axe upon my thigh,
A boar-spear in my hand, and in my heart
Lie there what hidden woman’s fear there will,
We’ll have a swashing and a martial outside—
As many other mannish cowards have
That do outface it with their semblances.

Pixi2 · 27/09/2015 15:29

What about Puck? I played him and his closing speech is quite good fun. She could channel her inner tinker bell.
'If we shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended...'

Lurkedforever1 · 27/09/2015 17:02

Definitely something from midsummer nights dream. I definitely think a 12yr old would identify with puck more than Juliet. Although I suppose it depends whether tragedy is more her thing.

howabout · 27/09/2015 17:07

I automatically thought of Portia, but I think there must be loads in a Midsummer Nights Dream that would work or Much Ado About Nothing. If it were my DD she would be washing out the damn spot though as she is a bloodthirsty sort.

jorahmormont · 27/09/2015 17:12

I did the 'Gallop apace you fiery footed steeds' monologue from Romeo and Juliet in a revue when I was about her age. It's pretty easy, not too long and a good one for that age.

overthemill · 27/09/2015 17:13

Quality of mercy as said before. Certain I had to do this is second year ( which would be year 8 now). Not Juliet, please

SheGotAllDaMoves · 27/09/2015 17:39

Some great ones by Puck in AMSND.

How about his final one. 'If we shadows have offended '

EvilTwins · 27/09/2015 20:04

Depends how long it needs to be. Puck's speech at the end of MND is not very long.

TheSecondOfHerName · 27/09/2015 20:09

I did Portia's quality of mercy speech for a drama exam at that age.

TheSecondOfHerName · 27/09/2015 20:11

Also raises historical context of anti-semitism which is educationally worth learning about.

NickMyLipple · 27/09/2015 20:14

I did Helena from MSND at around that age.

The monologue started: 'o spite, O hell, I see you all are bent" Google will help!

DoloresLandingham · 27/09/2015 20:31

'Gallop apace' is great but be aware that it is about Juliet waiting impatiently for the night to come so that Romeo can ravish her!
