it is possible to go up a grade from AS levels isn't it?

DD got BBC, she needs BBB for where she wants to go. Her C was in ICT and she was 5 marks from a B.
Her teacher is insistent that she needs to do a resit or she won't get the B Confused.
Me and DH are new to A levels, but I thought she could maybe go up a grade next year if she does well in her exams. Am I wrong?

Btw, DD is not doing the resit.

Yes, of course it's possible, but it's hard. I agree that it seems nonsensical to do resits when a student already has a decent mark, but I'm afraid it seems the best way to ensure a better mark. I think your dd's teacher is right to suggest a resit. You are right, and she could go up a grade without it, but it's much harder.

Look at it this way - A level is harder than AS, so it's even more difficult to achieve higher grades. If she didn't manage it at AS, she'll find it a real struggle at A2. Plus, she's need an A probably, to get a B overall.

A resit is definitely the way to go. It's not about scoring 5 more points to get the B, it's about getting as many points as possible (hopefully a lot more than an extra 5) to give her the best chance at getting a good grade overall.

AS marks are half the total A Level marks, so a high C in AS means she'd have to get a low A at least at A2. The A2 year is often regarded as more difficult than the first year so she'd have to absolutely work her socks off to get an A next summer.

Doable yes, but not easy, and she'll need to make sure her other two subjects don't suffer.

Thanks Smile
Shes adamant shes not doing the resit, she doesn't think she could handle the pressure. We'll have to discuss a back up plan.

Cocolepew if its the pressure of the resit along with doing all her A2's at the same time, how about suggesting that she does an hour a week starting now on the resit paper, that should be achievable particularly as she has already covered the syllabus, hopefully by the time the exam comes she should now it inside out and back to front!!! I presume if the resit results in a lower grade the original will still stand?

Cocolepew · 11/09/2015 12:49

I dont know if the higher grade stands.
I think if the resits were jan/feb she might have felt more inclined.
We are due to see her teachers soon so we can talk it through.

Sorry but I think she needs to do the re sit. She will need an A at A2 to pull her grade up to B.

I second the poster who said start now and do some each week (that Is what my DD1 did). I would also suggest getting her paper back to understand exactly where and how she dropped marks.

Sonnet · 11/09/2015 13:05

Check with your exam board but for Dd1 the higher grade stood - her re sits went up a grade each meaning her final results were 2 grades up from her AS results

Sonnet · 11/09/2015 13:09

Sorry not very clear above:
Her AS history results were an A and a C - overall grade a B
She resat the paper she got a C in.
Resit results -A
A2 results were A in exam and A in extended Essay therefore A overall. Without the Resit she would have hit a B

Cocolepew · 11/09/2015 13:11

If she doesn't do the resit she'd need to go to a different university, but she doesn't want to leave home, so she's going to have to make a decision.

Thanks for the replies btw.
I'll show them to DD later.

I would say resit with a short hour block now for revision toward it. Sounds very sensible.

Cocolepew · 12/09/2015 12:46

Thaks for al the input.
She has now decided she wants to go to a different university, after visiting her first choice today, and isnt doing the resit

Is ICT AS out of 200 or 300? Say 200. So she got 135/200 (as you said she was 5 marks off the B). Next year she'll need 280/400 altogether for a B, i.e. an additional 145/200. So she'll need to do better than she did last year, but getting a good B would mean a B overall.
