DD has just started 6th form, they have been given the option of studying Core Maths instead of General Studies. She would like to go to uni and so which one would look best on her application? She got an A at GCSE so should be able to cope with the content.

General Studies is pretty much the most worthless A Level, and many schools have stopped even pretending. Core Maths can't possibly be less respected.

I've got no idea what core maths involves, or whether it's respected, but I'd agree it can't be less respected than general studies.

Core Maths is new this year, its suppose to give them real life maths skills and to keep their maths skills up. Ideally we would like DD to do A level maths but she is having none of it, hence why we thought this might be a good ideal ie better than nothing and GS by the sounds of it!

I've heard of core maths, but don't know anyone who studies it. It's definitely got to be a better bet than General Studies though! Depending on her other A Level choices, she may find that it helps support other subjects.

Core maths is an AS equivalent studied over two years. There are various different courses under the core maths umbrella with slightly different content.

It's designed to be taken by students who got a C or higher at GCSE who can't or don't want to do A-level. It will be very useful for students who will go on to do e.g. Geography or social sciences at uni.

No idea how respected it will be as it's new, but it would certainly look better on a uni application for a course involving some maths than general studies.
