Grade C in English Literature only

A family member has just been advised by their college that they do not need to repeat GCSE English language to try and obtain a passing grade as they have passed the literature exam with a C. Can someone advise if this is correct or if it is potentially bad advice? The person is currently studying an art course and retaking maths GCSE after a precious art course and functional skills course last year.

Bad advice I'd suggest. For people who have just taken exams in the last few years they need GCSE English or GCSE English Language, which, along with maths, is the basic requirement for lots of jobs, courses etc. English Lit GCSE is not interchangeable.

It's true that they are not required to resit by the government.

The government says:

"GCSE English qualifications for the purposes of prior attainment
Students who have already achieved at least a C grade in any one of the English qualifications listed below by age 16 will meet the condition of funding and do not need to continue to study English:

GCSE English
GCSE English Language
GCSE English Language and Literature
GCSE English Literature"

However, I agree that English language GCSE may be required for jobs in the future so she might want to consider a resit anyway.

I agree. I think the college is technically right but I would encourage a resit in language as it could well be useful in future. Improved language skills are also useful the actual college course and Uni if she ever goes.
