Girls wearing trousers to school

GirlsWearTheTrousers15 · 06/09/2015 19:25

Is anybody else's daughter not allowed to wear trousers to school? My daughter is not allowed. I think this is very unfair. What do other people feel?

OP posts:
GrannyAch1ng · 06/09/2015 19:33

Have they said why? DD's school only allows trousers to avoid skirt waistband rolling which I can understand, even if I don't agree with it.

Shiningdew · 06/09/2015 19:34

I think it's unfair but it's common enough, and I'll stick my neck out and say you knew the uniform when you applied to go presumably?

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 19:36

shining

you seem to be under impression there are choices?

I'm sure there was a thread on this and the parent wrote to mps and everything. hopefully someone will remnber more and let you know. I credibly sexist and unfair and not sure it's even legally allowed

Shiningdew · 06/09/2015 19:38

If you only had the choice of one secondary school in your area then I take that back but in my experience a skirt only rule is pretty common. I thin uniform is pretty stupid anyway but it's just one of those things I think.

dementedma · 06/09/2015 19:40

Here in Scotland, pretty much anything goes....

GinandJag · 06/09/2015 19:41

My girls have to wear skirts. I am happy with that.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 06/09/2015 19:44

If you're not happy, change schools. But don't apply for a school then complain about the rules.

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 19:46

when people are discriminated against people should bloody well complain about the rules.

tights are itchy and no where near as warm as trousers can be.

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 19:49

the same schools that don't allow trousers are usually the same schools who insist on skirts being bought from a particular shop or from the school itself, fail to allow for children being on the taller side then send home or place in internal exclusions fir skirts being too short.

GinandJag · 06/09/2015 19:50

"Tights are itchy"

Is this something that you would seriously want to take to the court of human rights?

How come so many of us have survived through this torture with no ill effects?

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 06/09/2015 19:52

Tights aren't itchy, and they're a damn sight warmer than trousers.

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 19:52

my school didn't allow trousers. it was bloody freezing.

there is no reason why girls should not be allowed trousers.

it's not like asking to bring a knife to schopl it's just asking to be allowed to be as warm as the other 50 percent population of the same school.

GinandJag · 06/09/2015 19:57

If the school uniform is skirts, then that is a reason to not wear trousers. Saying you should be allowed to wear trousers is saying that you should be allowed to wear red when the colour is blue.

Trousers aren't any warmer than tights. In fact, they are a lot moire draughty.

SenecaFalls · 06/09/2015 20:00

Here is a thread from a MNer who challenged the requirement that her daughter wear skirts. In the thread there is a link to an earlier thread with a lot of good discussion.

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 20:00

Not at all. Confused

most schools allow girls to wear trousers or skirts.

most places of employment allow women to wear trousers or skirts.

it's asking for equal treatment not special treatment.

SenecaFalls · 06/09/2015 20:03

Entirely different issue about wearing blue/red. It is sexist for a school to disallow trousers, which are an otherwise completely conventional and acceptable clothing item for women and girls. What would their reasoning be for requiring girls to wear skirts?

GinandJag · 06/09/2015 20:06

Should boys be allowed to wear skirts?

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 20:07

if they so desired yes.

if a uniform is black or grey skirts or trousers then the child is complying.

Shiningdew · 06/09/2015 20:10

I wouldn't have a problem with a boy wearing a skirt. School uniform (if we have to have one) - students may wear black skirts or trousers - seems fair enough to me.

But many schools stipulate what students wear - it doesn't have to be a massive mammoth issue; schools aren't the real world, after all.

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 20:10

there is no health and safety issue, the trousers presumably would be correct colour, it's not even a presentation thing as trousers look smart too.

it's a rule for the sake of a rule and it's sexist

MrsWembley · 06/09/2015 20:12

Wasn't there something in the news recently about a school that banned girls from wearing skirts as they got so ridiculously short that male teachers were becoming embarrassed by it, especially when they were following girls up steps...

You could point out to the head that trousers will cause fewer problems in terms of pushing the boundaries?

GinandJag · 06/09/2015 20:14

I doubt that anyone would see that a boy wearing a skirt would be seen as anything less that totally disruptive

A girl wearing a skirt would be simply conventional.

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/09/2015 20:18

Why can't girls in trousers be seen as conventional too.

it's not 1935

Shiningdew · 06/09/2015 20:18

If a boy wants to wear a skirt I'd support him all the way. I would assume he either identified as a girl or preferred women's clothing and either way it's his right. I'm assuming secondary age here by the way. It's unlikely to happen but the point is it shouldn't be a stipulation.

However it's worth just accepting British schools have ALWAYS had daft ideas about uniform and telling DC just to nod and smile and that real life is better is a more sensible way of dealing with most issues.

Scarydinosaurs · 06/09/2015 20:21

I'm torn.

For simplicity I like the only skirt rule- loads less hassle for teachers.

From an equality PoV it's shit.
