Moving school during year 10

Its a long story but basically due to work reasons we need to move house due to jobs. No choice. Its looking like we will move around November time. We are moving from England to Wales.
Sadly we cannot make it any sooner due to working notice and a planned but essential hospital stay in a few weeks time.
Our son is 14 and just started year 10.

I feel sick at the thought of it.

We have lived previously in the location we are moving too so have a good idea of practacalities of getting too and from schools.

What I am struggling with is trying to find out how the school will help with a transition. Because we do not have an address (still looking for a home) we cannot apply for a school place and without a place no one at the school will take the time to speak to me.

I have called the 2 schools in the area and asked to speak to the head of year 10. But getting past the receptionist is more less impossible.

There are 3 subjects my son is desperate to keep out of his choices they are French and Art and Science but thankfully Science is definately a core and hopefully French is too.

I am guessing the GCSE will be very diffrent - I am assuming the welsh schools will use WJEC, and to be honest i'm not sure what exam boards his current school uses but doubt its Wjec being in Engand. Also, wondering what will happen with Welsh as I know its a compulsary GCSE. Despite living in Wales before my son never learnt welsh!

Has anyone been in a similar situation or are there any teachers on here who can offer any advice.

I feel so sick. There really is no way we can stay here any longer than Christmas or move any sooner than November - but want to just get moved asap and get armed with as much info as possible.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's quite busy at the start of term with all the admin, particularly for Heads of Year, you may have more luck with sending the school an email rather than trying to get the Head of Year on the phone. Schools sometimes publish their exam boards on their websites, so you could try there and see if you can work it out yourself. There is often a lot of crossover between different exam boards in some subjects, and any missed work will probably be covered in revision sessions in the run up to exams.

Moving in November is perfectly do-able if the school he is going to started their GCSE subjects in Year 10, but some schools start GCSEs in Year 9, and that would be far more to catch up, so I'd definitely ask that question when you contact the schools.
