Is there anyone else around whose child is starting a BTEC rather than A levels? Should we stay on this board or move to Further Education?

My DD has enrolled for Travel & Tourism.

Do any of you know about special consideration ? If my Mother goes today would DD get it for her second maths paper on the 9th or would that be too long a gap? Thanks.

HSMMaCM · 01/06/2016 09:57

Not sure sugar. You might need to ask the exams officer. You've had a rubbish year - take care. Flowers

SugarPlumTree · 01/06/2016 10:15

Thanks HSM, i'll email her Tutor on Monday. Not s year I would care to repeat !

I think Draylon that you are trying to apply logic to something that can on occasions can totally defy logic ie. A teenager !!! Fully get your frustration though. I take comfort in knowing that neurological changes in the brain occur at this point so at least there is something documented it all.

GasLightShining · 01/06/2016 12:16

Sugar Definitely check. I would be asking whether DD qualifies for special consideration already? You are all under a lot of stress at the moment

I might be wrong but I thought that college tutors don't have all the holidays off like school teachers do. Worth sending an e-mail now just in case

SugarPlumTree · 01/06/2016 12:33

They are up to speed with where we were up until last Friday. I think I'll wait and see when she goes then let them know, they have been good. She already potentially has an extension for the BTEC if she needs it but she's so tantalising close to being finished apparently I'd rather she didn't use it and gets the work finished to tomorrow if she can.

Then that would be one trip in next Monday to hand in and another on Thursday for the Maths. She just needs Special Consideration for the second maths paper in an ideal world. I'll hold off emailing until my Mother actually goes as guess it might take longer than Nurse says. Sorted DD's travel insurance yesterday ready for 18th so another thing done.

Thinking of you Sugar

SugarPlumTree · 02/06/2016 06:03

Thank you Gas, she went early hours. Basically 7 days before the second GCSE paper so I'll notify college and see what happens.

Hope the rest of them are getting work done but enjoying a bit of a break.

Thank you all very much. DD has taken it surprisingly well so far and says she has finished her work.

GasLightShining · 02/06/2016 13:43

I am so sorry Sugar. Thinking of you and the family.

I hope college is supportive especially bearing in mind that the funeral won't have taken place by then.

Agree you don't really get it at all at 15! DD holding up ok but boyfriend going back today so expecting it might all really hit home then. We can't go to the funeral as in Thailand which is unfortunate as it takes away the opportunity to say goodbye until we meet my Brother in Germany to do her ashes and I think that will be next year now. It is what it is though and we need to live with it.

What I didn't realise is she has to give a presentation to the class next week which she is really worried about. Do you think in the circumstances it would be OK if I ask if she does it to just the Lecturer?

GasLightShining · 03/06/2016 13:44

If you don't ask you don't get Sugar. I would see how she is over the weekend after boyfriend goes home.

Sorry that you can't be at the funeral. Why don't you on the day of the funeral have a special meal, a few drinks and a good talk about her. She'll be looking down thinking how exotic and much more glamorous than where the rest of the family are.

HSMMaCM · 06/06/2016 08:55

DD finishes her AS exams today and only has to go in for btec dance for the rest of the week. Good luck to those of you still working on assessments, particularly those with other things going on in their lives at the same time.

SugarPlumTree · 06/06/2016 10:09

That's good HSM. DD doing her presentation shortly but to small number of people. She goes in tomorrow for maths exam then again on Thursday then that is it. Tutor has emailed maths dept to see if she can have special consideration .

SugarPlumTree · 06/06/2016 13:09

She got a merit for the one handed in before half term, really pleased with that. Next one handed in today, not sure what happened with final one and presentation on Wednesday.

sashh · 06/06/2016 20:22

Hi all

Not been about for a while Draylon from what you have put the first college, Broc was it? That to me sounds the best in terms of him having people ahead of him.

Personally it is really difficult to motivate a student capable of a D if everyone else only wants P.

Could he do an AS or A Level in another maths subject, stats or AS further maths?

Draylon They don't make it easy to understand do they?

Some up thread mentioned PS does a BTEC IT/Computing thing too. Have you checked that out yet?

With DD it was nominally the same qualification at Eastleigh and Brock, but they choose different options. I ended up printing out the table of possible units from the Pearson site and got each college to annotate which options they did.

With DD's course they make sure they do all the 'mandatory' units in the first year, so that those that stop/drop out after one year still end up with a qualification (Subsiduary Diploma or something).
