Maths IGCSE

DD is in the top set for maths and will be going into year 11 in September. Her maths teacher has said that her class will be sitting maths IGCSE in January.

What is the difference between maths GCSE and maths IGCSE?

I have googled and the answers don't seem very clear.

Maths IGCSE is an equivalent qualification to GCSE with slightly different content. It's usually claimed that it's harder than GCSE.

Maths GCSE doesn't have sittings in January so maybe they have chosen IGCSE so they can get it out of the way early. I'm not sure that it will count for the school league tables though.

Thank you noblegiraffe, If that is the case I don't understand why the school is considering doing this as the HT is chasing an ofsted outstanding (currently good)

Lots of private schools seek out the hardest exams they can to give children the best education and bugger the league tables. I think that's a wonderful attitude so is nice if here a state school is doing the same.

I don't think there is a massive difference. My twins have just been comparing grades with older siblings who did GCSE not iGCSE and there is not much in it. They got A not A* in maths iGCSE but that is probably a fair mark and they aren't doing maths A level in September.
