Could someone please explain about remarking English GCSE papers?

She failed English Language, and her teacher said she would send the paper away to see if they could claw back a few extra marks. her projected grade was higher.

Is this common practice? and realistically what percentage of papers are upgraded?

any info at all on this would be appreciated, this is new and strange territory for our family.

Got an update on my daughters recorded 0 for her English language exam.
WJEC have found the exam paper but the printed answer is not in it, the school have a record that it was sent so WJEC have lost it :0
The school destroy the papers once they are sent off so they are trying to retrieve it from the laptop she worked on.
Her sixth form have had to enter her for the November resit as her overall mark is currently a D. Surely if WJEC have lost the paper they should give her a mark based on the aggregation of her other marks, rather than making her resit :(

Hi Greenandble it sounds as if what has happened here is that the printed answers and the cover sheet explaining that answers were done on a computer have become detached from the answer book. So the examiner has essentially marked it as if a blank answer book was handed in and given it the mark zero.
If a whole paper is missing for a pupil recorded as Present on the Attendance register then there is a procedure for tracking down missing papers and if the paper is still missing at deadline date then a special code is entered on the marksheet (usually M for missing) and then a mark will be allocated based either on other marks or on mock results. Extra pages missing is a bit of a grey area. Possibly what the school needs to do is request that WJEC checks the papers for all candidates in your centre (both foundation and higher) to make sure that your dds answers haven't been marked already and the marks given to another candidates (especially if your dd isn't the only one that uses a word-processor).
The only other possibility is that your dds printed answers were removed and sent on to a more Senior examiner, but if this was the case then usually the examiners fill out a form to state this has been done.
The only other possibility that I can think of is that if your dd did another GCSE exam on the same day could the printed answers have been sent off with the wrong paper?
Hope that helps

Cats life thank you.
I hadn't thought of these possibilities but will ask these questions of the school.
I agree if the answer sheet was missing why was this not recorded or the school contacted rather than a mark of 0 being awarded.
Thank you for your helpful support :)
