My son did unexpectedly badly in his AS levels and has to resit the year. The school is not letting him resit and he has to change schools. Have no idea how to go about this and am completely stressed. Any ideas? he did really well in his GCSCe. Any ideas/tips?

One of my DC had a gap year after AS level and worked several different jobs, then went to local 6th form college and did completely different subjects.

I really think 6th form college is the way to go.

You will need to organise this through the current school, but if the "bad" results are completely unexpected, I am surprised they aren't sending off for copies of his papers or requesting remarks.
Some colleges will allow pupils with grade Ds (or even "high" Es) to progress onto A2 and retake some AS modules alongside the A2 ones. If he could manage this with 2 subjects he may be able to top up with an EPQ for example. Some sixth forms have a lower threshold for moving onto Y13 than others so there could still be a way forward there.

Hi Tiggytape, the school was really unhlepful saying he probably did not work as hard as he should have and this often happens when they do well in their mocks (he got A's). Catslife, we are going to send off his papers for remarking but am doubtful as he did poorly in 3 subjects. To be honest I would rather he repeat Year 12 now rather than have to resit some along with year 13 etc. The weekend has put a dampner with progress to find admission but we hope to make progress next week.

Another quick question - he is also a keen tennis player. Is anyone aware of a school that might be able to support him with this? We have looked up tennis academies etc but no luck. Most such places are abroad.

Are you able to consider boarding either state or private? Whereabouts are you?

fernandes71 · 15/08/2015 10:20

LIZS we would prefer state as private is beyond our means but could look into it via finance. We are in West London

www.sbsa.org.uk

iirc RAAS has a sports focus. As they intake some kids from overseas (who still meet the nationality criteria) they may be more flexible to allow out of year group admissions.
