no coats/jackets in school

DD is in Yr7 and has been unable to find any pegs/coat hooks. I forgot to ask at parents evening, but haven't seen any myself either.

I know the rules are that coats/jackets are not to be worn within the school building and they are not allowed in classrooms at all. Which leaves the only place to put your coat, however wet, is stuffed into your locker.

Consequently there are very few children who take a coat to school and they would all rather stand at the bus stop in all weathers in their shirt sleeves than risk missing the bus by going back to their locker at the end of the school day to fetch their coat.

Is it only me who finds this odd?

doesn't she have to go back to her locker anyway to sort out her books for homework?, mine don't wear coats in school either, but they shove them in their lockers if they do take them - tis a bit of a trend atm not to bother and wear blazers only. Are these school buses?, because if they are can you point out to the school the tight timing and get them to see if they can leave 5 mins later?

No cloakrooms at my children's secondary or lockers either for that matter. They take their coats into the classroom and are encouraged to wear a kagoul type coat over the blazer rather than a full winter coat.

The areas that were claokrooms when the school was originally built in the late 60's have been partitioned off to extend the 'learning space'.

I think it's pretty common at secondary to not have lockers or cloakrooms.
I don't know of one round here that does.

juuule · 22/11/2006 13:24

No lockers or cloakrooms at our local secondary. Coats are carried around like everything else.

frogs · 22/11/2006 13:46

Dd1 school has cloakrooms, where they hang their coats, shoebags and outdoor bags. They keep their books in their desks in the classroom though, no lockers.

notagrannyyet · 22/11/2006 14:50

There are no cloakrooms at DSs secondary school.
Every child has a locker in their form room which they can access twice a day. There are pegs in the science labs and in the craft & cookery rooms and the children have to hang coats up. In ordinary class rooms coats have to be in bags/on the backs of chairs. Bulky winter coats are not practical mine wear thin waterproof over their sweatshirt or school fleece.
This is not ideal but in most large secondary school things going missing from traditional cloakrooms would be a nightmare for teachers.

my son's school is like juuule's they have to carry everything around, no lockers or anything

RTKangaMummy · 22/11/2006 14:58

DS has a book locker outside his form room and a huge games locker in changing room for all his hockey stuff + pe kit + swimming stuff

How do they cope with their hockey stick and games kit if they don't have a games locker?

WeaselMum · 22/11/2006 15:00

the arrangement doesn't sound odd, no - par for the course in the secondary schools I've seen.

Hallgerda · 22/11/2006 15:04

DS1 has one locker for everything - books, games kit and coat.

pooka · 22/11/2006 15:07

We didn't have cloakrooms at secondary school either. 800 children - how much space would be taken up by pegs?
Reason lockers more popular is because they are more compact and secure.

notagrannyyet · 22/11/2006 15:11

Normal games kit has to be stored in classroom lockers or carried around. Bulky stuff like cricket bags etc. are locked up in a separate room near the changing rooms.

fizzbuzz · 22/11/2006 15:58

None at the school I teach in either. I let my form put their stuff in my stockroom (this means I have to fight my way through hockey sticks, pe kits, coats, shoes x30 and God knows what else whenever I need anything)
Feel very sorry for them carting all that stuff round all day, especially in the winter.
The school was only built a few years ago, and stuff like lockers and cloakrooms were too expensive. Great eh?

Sherbert37 · 22/11/2006 16:00

Mine have to carry them around all day with them, so neither wants to take one unless I make a big fuss. It's not far, but it is sooo cold today.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/11/2006 16:22

It's rubbish really isn't it? We wouldn't put up with it in the workplace, why should they?

My ds's schoolbag weighs a tom and he only takes what he needs for the day.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/11/2006 16:23

a ton.

fizzbuzz · 22/11/2006 16:42

There's nowhere for staff to hang coats either.......
