Is it too early to start a 2016 girls 11+ W/SW London thread?

What do we think? DD is sitting 11+ for various consortium schools in January 2016 and I am slightly desperate for a thread to compare notes, pat each others shoulders etc..... I lurked on last years thread, but it didn't start until much later....

Just booking up open day places and filling in my registration forms now.....

Thanks for replies - yes I'm sure it varies according to the "popularity" of a particular school. It's something admissions officers are slightly vague about, it seems to me. Good luck to all DCs this year!

It's not a good idea to discuss the exams in detail, as there may be reserve dates for those who were sick/had clashes, so you might be giving them useful information which puts your own children at a disadvantage. If I were you I'd ask for my posts to be deleted.

mummyinatizz · 09/01/2016 16:12

As far as I'm aware the schools use a different paper for the reserve dates, and while we are sort of in competition with each other, think many of us are here to support one another.

Just back from JAGS, must have been 400/500 girls there today. DD came out smiling, saying the maths was tricky (again!). Cosy afternoon/evening on the sofa and comfort food, for DD that is, Wine for me!

Keep at it mums!

argyle1234 · 09/01/2016 16:22

Great idea we are headed off for Star wars and some Chinese food .hope this keeps her morale up

Shirleycantbe · 09/01/2016 17:18

I've asked for my post to be removed but surely they must have different papers for the reserve dates?

orangina · 09/01/2016 17:25

There MUST be different papers for the reserve dates surely…?

I can recall last year the reserve for some schools was the same paper, so advice on thread last year was not to reveal questions so good to withdraw posts

minoula · 09/01/2016 20:34

G&L do have a different reserve paper - they did last year.

piupiu · 10/01/2016 09:25

Does anyone know how many girls sat the Surbiton High exam this year? And how many classes they will have in yr7 in Sept 2016?
Also, how many girls are in the SHS prep yr6 and likely to go straight on to the senior school?
Our DD sat the exam this week and has her heart set on going there.
Trying to work out what the odds are!!

Gozogozo · 10/01/2016 10:48

500 sat the exam, 150 places in y7 & 40 reserved for junior school, so 110 places.

piupiu · 10/01/2016 11:12

Crikey, really that many sat it?
Do they just offer out 110 places and waitlist a % of rest, or offer many more assuming that most girls have applied to more than 1 school?
How many schools do people apply to on average? We only applied for 2!

mertonmama · 10/01/2016 11:27

I would imagine that of the 500 who sat most will be be sitting for at least 3 schools - and some for more. We sat 3 but know of people who did 5+

Of those who get offers to SHS a significant proportion will get other offers (LEH, PHS, WHS, G&L etc). Many won't, therefore, take SHS even if offered. I seem to recall that last year the SHS wait list moved very quickly.

So the numbers are much better than you think.

piupiu · 10/01/2016 11:42

Thanks Gozogozo and Mertonmama that's really helpful. Smile
Last question - do they still offer any non-academic scholarships to those on the waitlist?

lottiebear69 · 10/01/2016 11:46

Interesting shirleycantbe that you think emanuel offers 6-1 only 600 are allowed to sit the exam for 105 places so in your mind everyone gets a place! Not much point in having an exam then! 40 come up from year 6 now leaving 65 places - less than half get offered a place and I know that from several people I knew last year getting no offer from them. It used to be the easier option but not anymore.

AveEldon · 10/01/2016 12:58

Emanuel website says they expect to offer 75 places

AnotherNewt · 10/01/2016 13:22

Emanuel typically have about 120-125 in year7, and have about 40 coming up from their year6. So 80-85 places.

So my guess (stress this is a guess) is that they'll offer on their usual ratio (whatever that is) for the lower figure of 75 because the level of acceptances is increasing, and they were worried they had over-offered last year.

If 75 is the 'break even' point, they have a cushion if acceptance rate remains as high as last year.

Crazy2016 · 10/01/2016 13:29

Do they have a 50/50 girl boy ratio quota system or do they just offer to best candidates?

AnotherNewt · 10/01/2016 13:47

Emanuel always used to be boy heavy, but they aim for 50/50 and in the last few years have achieved it.

Shirleycantbe · 10/01/2016 14:16

Well it's what the registrar said to me - this was at the start of Dec. Perhaps it was only the extra places he was referring to - ie not those coming up from the lower school.

So that would leave significant numbers of applicants not getting offers.

Crazy2016 · 10/01/2016 15:19

Does anyone know what the numbers are like for Latymer this year and if always more boys than girls? Not feeling very hopeful!

minoula · 10/01/2016 17:06

Hi Crazy - when Dd sat 2 years ago it was 1200 for 120 places. They called back 450 for interview. Think there is more pressure on the boys places as far fewer options in the area for boys at 11 plus.

Crazy2016 · 10/01/2016 17:14

Thanks minoula. It all feels so out of my DD's reach at the moment! Trying to keep positive but all the odds seem so impossible! The consortium 2 exam seems to have been trickier than ever and so many children sitting these exams...
