Does this exist? Familiarisation with uni days for DC with ASD?

Ds2 has ASD and dyspraxia and is gifted at computing acc to his computer science teacher. He's coming to the end of Y10 so we have a little time before we need to make any decisions, but he takes a long time to get used to the idea of anything new so I think he'll need to start 'warming up' pretty soon.

He wouldn't be able to cope with anything like a residential course just yet but a day thing would be great

Any ideas?

If you have a particular university in mind, contact them and ask. If you don't have anywhere in mind try your nearest one.

It certainly exists at my local uni, as others have suggested contact the ones you are interested in and ask and you may be pleasently surprised

Came on to mention Bath, but Polter beat me to it. Maybe a university more local to you does something similar?

basildonbond · 24/06/2015 07:47

Thanks - he's obviously a bit young for the Bath course just yet however it's useful to know about for the future

He needs to have lots of time to warm up to new things/ideas so I think we will need to plan this carefully - new clothes sit in his drawer for at least 6 months before he'll wear them!

My friend's DS took a gap year so he could avoid any uncertainty over starting university. He applied post A levels so he knew exactly what grades he had, and accepted an unconditional offer before Christmas.

As soon as this was settled, the disability office had a meeting with him to discuss transition. They arranged several formal visits, including sitting in some of the first year lectures to really get a feel of what happened.

Thanks - not sure if ds would leave the house at all during a gap year but will add it to the list of options

Ds had a mentor from a local uni who met with him and talked about what to expect. Also the uni he has firmed and his insurance choice were both really impressive in the support they appear to offer.
He also did NCS during summer of Year 12 which did absolute wonders for his confidence.
