After school detention

Need advice please.....My son came home from school ( Academy) yesterday and said he has been given an after school detention for a tiny bit of green ink, and i mean tiny, ( felt tip pen ) on the front page of his school planner, he also had to buy a new one otherwise he would have to have gone to TRACT, so that would have been 2 punishments, i refused this detention yesterday and the school states that it still stands, i find this a petty thing, the school are saying zero tolerance, the book was damaged etc etc, i still refuse this detention as i think it is totally unfair and unjustified.
Can the school insist that he does this or am i within my rights not to make him do it?

What? A boar came out of the forest? Shock

Could she cycle?

Penguinsandreindeer · 13/12/2018 08:23

I would keep her out of it. Boars can be quite aggressive. We had two go into our car once and a lady warned us not to get out as 8 had attacked a woman there recently. They shouldn't be stopping her from events for an optional session.

Abismother · 13/12/2018 08:52

Yep lots of boar roam around here. Cycling not really a safe option because of the unlit road and the amount of hgvs using it to get to and from the Ribena factory.

Hi
I’m looking for some advise, my DD school dang to say she was getting a 1 hour detention because she and 15+ kids watched 2 boys have a fight after school, my argument is my DD wasn’t involved in the fight so why should she have to have a sententious I was told she should have stopped it now really given the levels of knife crime why would she, so I told the teacher she not doing as in my eyes any child would watch other filmed it which is totally wrong, so regardless of me telling the teacher DD wasn’t doing it they try to call me today I was in work as I work in primary school I try to call back but got voicemail they made my DD do the detention knowing full well I told her not too they even had on the system for a teacher to escort her to the detention, I think as they couldn’t speak to me they shouldn’t have made her do it until myself and them had spoken. I know feel this was there way of sticking 2 fingers up and at me so I’m looking for some advice as I’m going into the school tomorrow, they wouldn’t take her on a school trip without my permission so they shouldn’t be doing this when they know my feelings on the matter

titchy · 28/03/2019 21:07

You need to start your own thread. But schools have every right to keep your child at school for up to an hour for after school detention. They don't need your written permission for something that takes place at school.

She should have walked away by the way, and no any child would not have stopped and watched.

Whyisitallsostressful · 01/04/2019 13:02

Personally I think your daughter deserves the detention.
Perhaps the school saying that she should have tried to stop it is a little extreme, but if my daughter stood around watching a fight like it was some kind of entertainment I would be so ashamed of her.
Sounds like the school are just trying to teach her to have better judgement.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/04/2019 13:07

@Goldenmother Firstly you need to start your own thread really not piggyback on a 4 year old thread.

Secondly, yes she deserved the detention, as standing around watching is instigating and encouraging. If you are so worried about ‘knife crime’ WALK AWAY ffs!!

stokecityfc2019 · 19/04/2019 05:09

i always had detentions

prh47bridge · 19/04/2019 07:52

@Goldenmother - It would have been better if you had started your own thread. But you need to support the school. They have the legal right to keep your daughter in for a detention regardless of whether or not you consent. The relevant law gives the school wide powers to set and enforce rules regarding pupil behaviour.

And, while I think saying she should have tried to stop the fight is over the top, she should not have stood and watched. If she had walked away she would not have a detention.

stokecityfc2019 · 21/04/2019 21:00

i had a detentions quite a lot at school i always was sat by myself. my first job was to put all the chairs on up on the desks except for the one i was sitting on. And i had to wright lines for 1 hour felt lonely

99calmbeforethestorm · 26/04/2019 13:23

I’m assuming by stop the fight school means tell a member of staff rather than watch it happen. School has every right to make her do the detention.

Coopertrooper97 · 02/05/2021 19:47

That's absolutely not true, lmao. YOU have final say over anything.

Porcupineintherough · 03/05/2021 13:01

Honestly, I would not choose this as my hill to die on. Yes it's pretty but it's just a detention.

Porcupineintherough · 03/05/2021 13:05

petty

spanieleyes · 03/05/2021 13:07

Given the original post is over two years old, I would imagine they're out of detention by now!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 03/05/2021 14:58

The original post is 2015 ZOMBIE thread again.

I did ask on site stuff back in January for there to be a banner on posts that are old, like MN have commented ones but a different colour. They said they would think about it. Sigh.

prh47bridge · 03/05/2021 16:07

@Coopertrooper97 - I refer you to Education and Inspections Act 2006 section 92 which gives schools the absolute right to detain pupils after school regardless of parental objections.

As others have pointed out, this is a five-year-old zombie thread. Resurrecting it to say something that is clearly wrong is, to say the least, unhelpful.

Childdefence · 29/11/2023 23:24

The law said after school detention is for serious behaviour and that’s not serious behaviour

The law says no such thing. It is completely silent on when detentions can be used. And this thread is now 8 years old. To repeat a point I made in my last post on this thread, resurrecting a zombie thread to say something that is wrong is unhelpful.

Childdefence · 30/11/2023 00:14

Beg to differ show me the law and I will show you the requirements for after school detention. Just because you put it on a web page and on . Gov doesn’t mean it’s law.

noblegiraffe · 30/11/2023 00:16

Can you link to the law on after school detention that says it's only for serious behaviour (and what that means)? The onus seems to be on you here.

Pretty sure the original child will have now left school, so hopefully still isn't sat in detention!

As @noblegiraffe says, since you are the one claiming that the law says something, the onus is on you to show it is true. However, to give you a hand, the law for detentions is the Education and Inspections Act sections 91 & 92.

I am still requesting my zombie banner to be at the top of threads like this, @MNHQ this is why we need it. Original post from 2015. And I did request it on the site board.

So like the MNHQ have commented banner, something right at the top of the page to say this is a zombie thread but in a different colour, maybe a lurid green or bright pink.
