Getting into Kent grammar schools from London

Just how difficult is it??

We live in South East London (zone 2), probably not in catchment for a decent comp. We don't really want DD to go private so were looking at the grammars in Kent/Bexley/Medway.

DD is in the top couple of students of her class (yr4) for maths and literacy, but it is a state primary that is still working its way up from poor standards just a few years back. So possibly not a good guide to her ability.

She is having tutoring for the 11+ but is it unrealistic to think she has any chance of getting a place at a superselective? Is that only for the genius children of this world? I would hate to put her through a couple of years of extra homework and lessons if there's virtually no chance of it being worth it.

Anyone know anyone who's got a place at one of the grammars from this far away? And if so, is the daily travel an issue? Another worry!

You need to look at the admission policies of the individual schools to see what their criteria are. Ie. Catchment areas quota etc. Also, consider travel. Often, it's not the distance but the ease of travel. A 10+ mile direct bus route, is easier than a five mile trip involving several changes. Are there any children from your area going to Kent grammar schools - that may give you an indication if it's feasible.

Have you looked at the elevenplusexams website. They should be able to help and advise you. There's a good forum.

Have a look at the elevenplusexams forum - lots of posts from people who are out of county in the regional forum - Kent. Basically you have to be one of the very top scorers to get a place in the super selectives ie Newstead Woods - odds of one place for every 10 applicants. For Kent, again a very high score needed ( not many places for out of the parish areas) and for Bexley in the Top 180. I think Chis and Sid went out the furthest of the grammar schools in Bexley in the past but catchments seem to be shrinking year on year.
From my experience (of children who have been offered places at these schools from Zone 2) those who stand the best chance are the children who are tutored for a long time, have great vocabulary, are quick workers and as near to level 6 in maths and English as possible.
