GCSE OPTIONS HELP NEEDED

gcsehelpneeded · 09/05/2015 10:25

My family and I are moving to Singapore from England at the end of this school year, subsequently my dd now has to re-choose her gcse options. She was happy with her options in England (PE, Art, Geography and French) where she has started her geography and french already she has decided however she is not too keen on geography anymore. At her new school she has the option to do psychology which has very much so interested her. She wants to do fashion journalism when she is older so thinks that art will be helpful however she is currently not too good at it but believes she will learn a lot from the gcse. She has to pick 4 from Psychology, Pe, Geography, Art and French, any views this is very urgent ?!

Does she already have other humanities among her core subjects ? If she wants to enter journalism then geography would be the best facilitating subject of those. Within Art there is written work and opportunities to use different media so , for example , finding drawing tricky may not be an issue . It is however tricky to get a top grade in art and the workload heavy.

Psychology GCSE is not very highly thought of, its a bit too low level to do much real psychology (which needs Maths).
Geography is a tricky subject because most people prefer 1/2 the course to the other 1/2, so either like the Physical Geography side and not like the Human Geography side or vice versa. I would encourage her to keep a language and a humanity, and to realise that Art is a lot of work (there are threads here about it).

I think she should keep geography (and cross fingers it's more enjoyable in new school), art and French.

Leaving a choice between psychology and PE.

Neither of these at GCSE is likely to be any particular use in leading to fashion or journalism. It might be worth sticking with PE if she knows she likes it (but look at time commitments if art is in the mix). But if she's really keen on the idea of psychology, then go for it. People usually go better in subjects they like, and as I'm already recommending gritting teeth and persisting with geography, then 'one for fun' out of these two is an OK balance.

She does know that it is between those two and is struggling as she is very good at PE (targeted A* at her current school) but is very interested in psychology. At the moment she is thinking of dropping PE as it is not very useful for her career path nor anything she is thinking of doing.

Yes she knows art is a lot of work and is prepared to grit her teeth as she thinks it will be helpful and thoroughly enjoys it. As far as geography she much prefers human geog however is a lot better at the physical side which is a tough circumstance! Is PE seen to be 'soft' at unis?

Her core subjects are: Maths, English lit&lang, IGCSE biology, chemistry and physics. So no there is not a humanity.

Yes pe is seen as soft, as is psychology even at a level . What other subjects are chosen already? History, Rs for example?

LIZS · 09/05/2015 17:05

Posts crossed. She needs a humanity option and a mfl.

gcsehelpneeded · 09/05/2015 17:43

Okay thank you, I have heard that psychology is not seen as soft at a level because it shows a different style of thinking?
