Are there any girls/co-ed independent schools that give substantial academic scholarships in West London, or are they unlikely to change the bill?

As a general rule the move is away from Scholarships to Bursaries so scholarships aren't worth so much any more. The most I have seen is around 10%.

Your title and first post are contradictory!

The "cheapest" - therefore probably poorest schools would surely have the least amount of money available to offer for Scholarships and, more importantly, bursaries.

I suspect that any school that promoted itself primarily on cheapness would probably have less to offer than any good state school.

I think there are some that do almost full scholarships/bursaries (no idea which). But Zero is right, they aren't necessarily the cheapest/lowest fee-d schools - St Paul's is one, for example.

The GDST schools do have lower fees than most other Independent schools, so look at Putney High or a Wimbledon High. They do give a few Academic scholarships but I think 25% is the best I have heard of. Most money is now ear marked for means tested bursaries.

St Catherine's in Twickenham and Thames Christian College are cheaper than a lot. Don't know about their Bursaries. I know someone on full Bursary at I stock. The Whit gift foundation schools have a bigger Bursary pot than many. LEH is trying to attract applicants who are very clever but whose parents wouldn't. Normally think about Indies and has an outreach programme looking for such applicants.

Putney High was offering a 40% scholarship 3 years ago, Francis Holland Clarence Gate offered a 25% scholarship, Godolphin & Latymer offers music scholars 40% off all fees. SPGS scholarship is only about £100 per annum but you can have a bursary as well. LEH scholarship used to be 10% off fees. St Catherine's used to offer a good scholarship but I don't know how much it is now.

Toooldforthat · 07/04/2015 20:34

Thanks! We would not qualify for bursaries. 10% is not that much money and the 25% ones are probably very hard to get!

Emanuel has a couple of stonkingly big scholarships - 75% off the fees for the Foundation Scholars however registrations for September 2016 have already closed and even though the academic standard in general isn't that high, the children getting the huge scholarships are very bright indeed

If you don't qualify for a bursary and can't afford fees I'd start looking closely at your likely state options

I don't think your primary concern can be which school is cheapest. Surely you need to look at the ones which are the right fit for your dd, offer subjects in which she is interested, have extra-curricular clubs which she would like to attend, are logistically possible etc etc. Lots of things have to come into play, not just money. I appreciate school has to be affordable but you can't just choose the one which is cheapest and hope it works out - that could end up as just throwing money away.

Surbiton High give up to 50% academic scholarship, 40% all rounder
Kingston Grammar give up to 20% academic.

Waitingandhoping2015 · 08/04/2015 12:41

10% doesnt sound a lot I agree, but adds up to around £12,000 over 7 years which sounds better!

Then again with current fee inflation you are actually paying for a total of about 8 years if staying for 7... so I guess the 10% discount takes out much of the inflationary aspect of fees!

Kingston grammar is just about doable commute wise, I'll look into this one. Thanks
