Naming uniform

Ds starts y7 in Sept, he has As and would lose his head if it was not screwed on, what's the best way to name stuff so it has a good chance of being recognised as his, but won't cause social suicide?
For primary he has nametapes stitched in everything at the back of the neck, waist band, you get the idea!

Name tapes or marker pen

balletgirlmum · 06/04/2015 20:18

Dd has nametapes in everything or iron on transfers in socks etc. Shoe labels in her shoes.

inflagrantedelicto · 06/04/2015 20:33

Thank you Flowers I didn't want to do it, and for him to then be teased.

Name everything! Tutor group/ year group would be helpful too. We teachers really appreciate it!

balletgirlmum · 06/04/2015 20:42

Dds form tutor in year 7 told me at parents evening that a disproportionate amount of her time was spent chasing round after their lost property. She thanked me for making her life easier as I am anal about naming stuff.

AtiaoftheJulii · 06/04/2015 21:30

Definitely name it all. I just write the name on it somewhere (or twice) with laundry marker generally, quick and easy. I don't want to sew. I've found that the iron in ones do stay there, but the printed name comes off - at which point I get the laundry pen out again :)

AtiaoftheJulii · 06/04/2015 21:33

Oh, and I help sort lost property at ds's school, and there is largely a mixture of written names and sewn in tapes. Ds has mostly ironed on strips which are his house colour (to help with the sorting) - his are the only pink nametags I have seen Wink

TheFirstOfHerName · 06/04/2015 21:34

DS1 (Y10) says that lots of Y7s and Y8s have nametapes in their uniform. Apparently it starts to look a bit pathetic by Y9 which is unfortunate for him as I still sew nametapes into all of his stuff

Kenlee · 08/04/2015 06:20

DD year 8 has big silk name tags on any item of clothing. Anything that is electronics we register the id number with the school and place a brother label on it. All other stuff get the brother label too. (Brother labelling machine is good as when its on. Its quite difficult to peel off without making a mess)

Hope that helps....

I use attach a tags
www.attachatag.com/

They are a plastic button engraved with name that you can attach to labels etc. I really can't face sewing.

For trousers, if they have white pocket inserts then I write the name in marker pen on those so when they look into the trousers to put them on they can see if they have their name in them.

TheUnwillingNarcheska · 08/04/2015 13:14

I use pre-cut woven labels and sew them in with a sewing machine. Ds1 is in year 7 and his labels have his name and his class on. I was so impressed with them I bought some for Ds2.

Because of the uniform colour I chose a colour that would contrast well. I have sewn them onto everything, including the football socks he wears. They hide underneath the turn down at the top but are clearly visible unfolded and therefore easy to find.

I put them where they are easily visible when the clothing isn't on the body. So the collars of all shirts, jumpers, waist band of trousers and on the reversible rugby top it is folded in two and half is on the outside and half on the inside next to the brand label at the bottom hem. I have sewing thread that matches all the kid's uniform colours so they blend in completely from the visible side of the clothing. Honestly with the sewing machine, it is very quick.

The labels are from here and are really good quality. Ds1 has label issues and button phobia but they are soft enough not to be a problem.

Ds school and the one dd3 will attend come september both subscribe to
Find my kit works well in ds's all boy school you do actually get told when it has been found.

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 08/04/2015 20:45

I've just ordered some pre-cut iron-on name labels from amazon for about £3.50, with my son's name already printed on.
Attach the label near to the tag with the washing instructions on - not too visible.

EdithWeston · 08/04/2015 20:46

The attachatag things are invariably overlooked as they are small, dark and I not a common way of labelling.

Either sharpie onto neck of shirts, or use name tapes with white backgrounds and block lettering.

And even if you stick/sew/write on multiple markings, make sure at least one of them is in the 'obvious' place for the garment. It speeds return if found (former PTA list property sorting volunteer).

cressetmama · 09/04/2015 15:40

DS' prep school ordered 50 big name tapes with their peg numbers on in the first form, and they kept that number all through to 6th form. All games clothes, bags and Wellies were named on the outside which helped avoid kit being borrowed. Probably a complete no-no after Y9 though.

Lottie4 · 09/04/2015 15:54

Just to say that whatever you decide to do, it's worth doing. Over nearly three years DD has mislaid her whole PE kit, a PE t-shirt x 2 and trainers (I suspect she left them in the changing room). With the help of labels she's had all but one t-shirt returned/confirmed as hers. Some things have been returned to form tutor, but she had to pick up the courage to ask at student reception & PE office to get one of her t-shirts back.

OinkBalloon · 09/04/2015 16:16

I've order all sorts of sew-in, iron-on and stick-down labels over the years, but invariably end up resorting to Sharpies, Biros and silver pens for reliable labelling. I keep a set by the washing machine and refresh labels as I sort laundry.

Place labels where they can't easily be removed without spoiling the item. So not on care tags, for example. This is particularly important for 'desirable' or expensive items. Big bold Sharpie on the white pocket insert is good. If the dc is embarrassed by labels anywhere other than on care tags, add their name big and bold somewhere like the inside of a sleeve or pocket.

Use name and, for secondary, tutor group without year number.

TheFirstOfHerName · 09/04/2015 16:19

Yes, my boys have had a total of about £200 worth of kit returned to them since starting secondary school. A couple of years ago, some rugby shorts got back to DS1 after he lost them at an away game at a different school.

Steppeoneggs · 09/04/2015 16:29

we have the advantage of all pe kit having their name on the outside. I did object to paying for it, but have come to realise that there are no problems with stolen kit.

All uniform has sewn in name tag. I also use a permanent marker pen on the less visible label so if the sew in one is cut out, the item is still named.

We have lost a coat, but ds left it on the train Hmm
