How much revision would you expect - yr 8 exams?

DD is yr 8, has yearly exams in non-core subjects on the first three days back to school (core subjects - eng/maths/sci - already done before the hols). Wondering how much revision others would expect in this situation?

It's a rather hypothetical question, in practice, as we're away for the rest of the week now, and had family staying last week, but interested to know what would be 'normal', IYKWIM.

Probably an hour or two a day, rotating them around. She'll regret working too hard for them when she reaches serious revision at GCSES...

Will the results be used for anything such as sets? Because if not I'd be tempted to say NONE. She's a year 8 child and deserves some holiday and relaxation and not to be stressed about the exams. I say this as someone who taught in secondary schools and sixth forms for ten years.

You know, I strongly suspect dd won't regret working too hard for these exams . . . Grin

TooTired, to be honest, I think not in that there's only one Welsh language set for most of the humanities, and she's pretty solid at French (plus it's the one subject she probably will do some work for). That's a very reassuring answer, thank you!

Dd is in year 8 but her yearly exams were after Xmas for which she did little revision, half an hour every few days at most.

This easter she is doing a little maths homework most days to consolidate stuff/work on specific areas of weakness. I wouldn't normally make Her but they had a supply teacher from Xmas to feb half term who really let them coast. The new teacher is I think trying to get them back on track.

A bit. Not loads. Just enough to recap the topics covered.

None at all. Shock No Ruddy way.

MissDemelzaCarne · 06/04/2015 21:40

My DD is in the same situation, I'm not expecting her to revise.

Molio · 06/04/2015 22:41

None. I have a current Y8 DD and I won't be watching her at all.

BackforGood · 06/04/2015 22:56

My Yr8 isn't doing any work during the holidays.

Mind, my Yr 11 isn't exactly straining herself either

mummytime · 07/04/2015 06:42

My year 11 isn't doing much, but she did give a great (thorough) explanation of why there were "fences in the sea" for her little sister yesterday.

Mine did little revision for year 8 exams. I did encourage one to do some, but that was because if they had they could have pulled themselves up to a higher set. Now I'm not sure if that would have been a good thing or not (as they will do okay where they are and might have collapsed under higher expectations).

My DD wouldn't do revision in Years 7 and 8, even though I reminded her. She's in Year 9 now and is starting to do "small" amounts.
