Year 9 levels- I know, I know!

Would anyone share their Year 9's current attainment levels? Ds is doing very well in the context of his school- but it is a school with very few high attainers, so no way of knowing whether it's relative or absolute!

The expected national level is a 6 and the highest mark you can receive on the paper at this age is an 8.

Hakluyt · 02/04/2015 09:36

Thank you. I was just hoping for some examples from other schools to compare.

Have sent pm

Flugdrachen · 02/04/2015 15:08

Just had her report emailed to me - in her GCSE subjects she's 7a/7a/7a (maths/eng/sci), 7b/7b (French/drama), 8c/7a (history/geog). Everything else is 7a apart from German which was a 6a I think.

Maths & French are a sub level lower than the last report ... have just fired off an email to school. She's coasting, I hope that lower levels will give her a bit of a kick but she's pretty immune to criticism.

kitnkaboodle · 06/04/2015 00:32

Sorry, not terribly helpful, but I've posted all my son's current year 8 levels on another thread here - ' bright year 8 boy coasting'. That's at a good comp, top sets. Year 8 tho' , so I guess his expected progress in a year's time will be 2 sublevels up from those

Sexyhouseslippers · 06/04/2015 00:42

Stealth boast if your DS is doing well you don't need to compare him, even if that's not the case their no needy.

MrsGuyGarvey · 06/04/2015 00:48

Dd2 is in year 8, she's mostly on 6a's with a couple of 7's in subjects she's good at. So I'd expect 7/8's next year - this is in a top performing grammar where she's considered average.

Feellikescrooge · 06/04/2015 12:27

As of now schools are no longer allowed to use levels. By now your DCs' schools should have informed you of their new manner of assessing KS3. It is quite confusing but all schools should have told you how they are going to do this.

noblegiraffe · 06/04/2015 13:32

My school still uses levels. We are hanging on to see what other schools do before switching to a new system.

As the government has provided bugger-all guidance on this I really don't think they can penalise us.

noblegiraffe · 06/04/2015 13:34

At my school, btw, which gets over 80% A*-C in maths, we'll have a top set of 30 where all get a level 8 and a second set where about half will.

Don't know about other subjects.

Hakluyt · 08/04/2015 08:49

Not a stealth boast- if I wanted to boast I wouldn't be stealthy about it! And anyway, from this thread I clearly have nothing to boast about.Grin

Our school this year is using a mixture of NC levels and GCSE grades- we haven't sorted out our new grading system yet. A bit reluctant to do it because parents sort of understand NC levels- it's going to be very difficult to convert them to something new.

Ds is working at level 7 in English, GCSE grade B in maths.

We don't get levels in other subjects and we don't get sublevels - (non-selective) independent school. He's had some past GCSE papers in Science this term and got grade A.

He is working bang slap in the middle of the top sets.

Whyjustwhy · 08/04/2015 10:08

My DD is at a very good comprehensive school, and her grades range from 4C to 7A!
Op i have pm'd you!

Hakluyt · 08/04/2015 10:21

Actually, just realised I hadn't put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. 7b English, C2 maths, 7c Science, 7C History, B1 Media Studies, B2 RE, 6C PE and E1 Spanish. Spanish is most definitely an issue!

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 08/04/2015 10:27

What on earth is a C2?

Lottie4 · 08/04/2015 10:31

My DC's school seem to provide their levels differently, but do state the maximum is an 8. The levels she was given last month were as follows:

English 6.75, Maths 6.75, Science 6.75, Fine Art 5.75, Ethics 7.5, French 6.5, Geography 6.75, History 5.75, IT 6.25, Music 5.25, Spanish 5.25, DT 5.75.

The other comparisons clearly given above are higher than my DCs so not sure what's normal. However, she's been told her Ethics level is the highest in the year (240 pupils). A recent practice controlled assessment in French gave her an A*. From what's been said to her, and then us at options evening, the school would anticipate she'll be sitting the higher GCSE papers rather than foundation where only a C is available, so they must anticipate she could be capable of a B (or hopefully the odd A).

Obviously I don't know what levels your son has, but hopefully the above helps a little. My DC is in all the top sets at a highly thought of comprehensive school by the way, so there must be many other DCs there and at other schools with lower levels

Hakluyt · 08/04/2015 10:49

I think the letters are what they could get if they sat the GCSE today. 2 means "secure" 1 is "some elements of the next grade up" and 3 is "some elements of the grade"

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 08/04/2015 10:54

Right, so a C2 is a 7b in maths. Why on earth don't they just put that, especially as they have levels for other subjects? Especially given that Y9 won't be getting a C or any other letter in maths!

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2015 10:55

Btw a 7b in maths in Y9 at this point would be expected to get an A or at a push an A* at GCSE in old money.

Hakluyt · 08/04/2015 11:02

I know, giraffe, daft isn't it?

His school has only twice had anyone get more than 4 As at GCSE, and very few go on to university, and ds wants (at the moment-who knows in the future) to be a barrister. So I am keeping a close eye on things. It does sound as if he's on track-ish. Must get the whip out over the Spanish, though!
