Hi my DD will be going on a 4 day residential trip to Paris in the Summer term and Im just seeing if anyone who has been there done that has any tips/advice , do's and don'ts . They will be doing the usual - Eiffel tower , river boat trip down Seine , day in Disneyland Paris etc .
I know we will get a full briefing from the school but always handy to hear the low down from parents/children that have been already.

Many thanks

DD1 did this in y7, though for a shorter time.
We also 'did' Paris as a family last summer.

The biggest thing is wear comfortable shoes

Otherwise

  • listen to teacher's instructions and follow them
  • take the opportunity to have a go at speaking French
  • make sure you keep an eye on the time (DD2 had to walk down from the second floor of Eiffel Tower as the queue for the lifts was too long)
  • take an adaptor so she can charge her camera/phone
  • have fun

I'm an MFL teacher, and I've led trips to Paris.

Check what the school say about mobile phones. Our school lets the kids take them; other schools discourage them. Even if she does take a mobile, don't be too discouraged if you don't get more than a quick text -- no news is usually good news!

Make sure you have a contact number for the teachers which will work 24/7 (i.e. during the school day you can just ring the office, but at night nobody will be at the school). You probably won't need it, but it's nice to know that you can get in contact if there's an emergency.

I second Teen about comfortable shoes. The amount of kids who want to show off their designer sandals, only to get blisters!

Get DD to take a watch, even if she doesn't normally wear one, as the pupils can get in trouble for being late back to a meeting place, and "my phone's out of battery" isn't a valid excuse.

And most important... Nicky try not to worry, I know it's scary when your kids go off 'alone', Nicky's DD have a great time and try to speak some français

Thanks so much to both of you for your replies they have been really useful - especially about the comfortable shoes and the watch ! I'm really excited that she has the opportunity to go and she cant wait ( already planning what shes going to take : ) ) I will also try my best not to worry !
