Does anyone know much about these schools?

I have heard mixed reports about both, especially re behaviour.

I know Rainford is in a nice new building and has a new head and that Ormskirk got a good Ofsted.

I would be really interested to hear from people that currently have dc at these schools as we need to choose between them for dd who is in y5.
We are fairly new to the area so any info would be helpful.

thanks x

Hi

Im familiar with both schools as I have family members who attend both.

Both seem to have good reputations. However ormskirk school is huge by comparisons to other local schools. I have heard about questionable behaviour at ormskirk high but no more than any other schools.

However where do you live?. I expect you wouldn't fall in the admission criteria for both as they tend to be popular and wherever you live will likely determine which one you get in anyway. For example if you live rainford way, you won't get in ormskirk high and likely visa versa.

Currently Burscough Priory is the better of the three if you live near to that school. It's made fantastic progress with sats for example over recent years. St. Bedes is also better thought of than those two too but never takes non Catholics these days as too oversubscribed with church applicants.

My dh used to teach in Ormskirk High a few years ago. He said there was a real mix of behaviour. The local children were fine however the children that travelled from Skemesdale were more challenging. It is a very good school though. It's a traditional comp a real mix of students.
My sister went to Rainford High it was a very good school although we are talking 30 years ago! I have heard it is still very good though.

Children from Skelmersdale also travel to Rainford High as well.

halestone · 06/04/2015 00:48

And not only Children from Skelmersdale exhibit challenging behaviour.

SoonToBeSix · 06/04/2015 03:44

I know not only children from
Skemesdale are challenging but as a whole that was the case.
I doubt Rainford high has many children from Skem. Geographically that doesn't make much sense.

halestone · 06/04/2015 16:15

SkeLmersdale, if you wish to tar the children with the same brush, at least spell the name right.

SoonToBeSix · 06/04/2015 17:47

Hale I used to live in Skem it was a typo! And it's not an insult it's just a fact. Not all the children from Skem were challenging however out of the challenging children in the school the vast majority lived in Skem.

Buttercupsandaisies · 06/04/2015 21:11

To be honest those kids who travel from skem do so at an inconvenience to their family so I'd expect them to come from families who are more invested in their kids education and so would expect better behaviour than those locally. They travel further than there own local schools which are okay.

Most of the issues with behaviour I've heard about at the school relate to those kids seen hanging around the local park - which kids those travelling from skem don't go to it as fairly out of their way. Plus they really are few in number these days - literally you must be talking about 10 kids per year from skem in a 100plus intake.

However the behaviour of the school generally is no worse than any other but it's a huge school so over represented.

Lots of children from skem go to rainford, exotically those at the top end towards up holland.
