Can schools remove you from a subject - A Level?

My DS is currently doing his A Levels and has had a massive blip recently (some personal issues).

He was very behind on one of his subjects and has a lot of catching up to do.

He was given a timeframe in which to complete it, and has done the research, but as we didn't have the proper programs at home, couldn't upload it in the proper way.

As a result, he has been kicked out of the subject.

I've been reading up on this and it seems to be mixed comments regarding whether schools can/can't do this?

I've also been told by a couple Mum's of past students, that this has happened before as it will have an impact on league tables should he fail the subject??

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes schools can and do make their own rules regarding who does what course especially post 15. It is quite usual for there to be a deadline to be met for catching up and then to be removed from the course if you don't do so. It's about personal responsibility by this point. If he didn't have the resources at home he needed to talk to relevant staff well ahead of the deadline to arrange to use what he needed in school.

Is he doing AS or A2 at the moment. Just wondering at what stage of the course they have kicked him off. If A2 this summer that is a bit bloody awful so near to the finals.

It sounds like he was given some targets to meet if he wanted to stay on course as an ultimatum

But he didn't meet them.

Or am I over simplifying?

Was his final coursework not handed in? What subject?

We quite often have to do this, but it is only as a last desperate measure. If a student is just not doing the work, then they don't have the capability to take the exam. Or if they don't comlplete coursework, they aren't going to get a grade in that unit.

We don't do it at A2, but at As sometimes we have to
