GCSE advice for dyslexic ds

I really need some GCSE option advice for my DS he is dyslexic - his reading and spelling are fine but his hand writing is incredibly slow and he finds letter formation difficult. He has quite bad concentration and communication issues as well. He is doing ok in school - he is currently a 5a in English, but working at a 6a/b level in some subjects. We have ruled out History and Geography as options due to the amount of handwriting involved. What subjects have your children with dyslexic chosen? Thanks in advance, we are finding it all a bit overwhelming :) xx

How is he at typing? If handwriting is a real issue then the school can arrange for him to use a word processor for exams or possibly a scribe.

Coursework is typed. If he wants to do a subject then they should be able to work around his handwriting issues. He'll have to take English anyway!

My dyslexic DS has just opted for History, PE and Art as his three options. He loves History even though it is a challenge; he uses Dragonspeak as part of his standard way of working at school (it is a dyslexia specialist school, so they are geared up for this) which will help. Would this be something your DS's school could look into?

My two are both dyslexic and both did History, in fact DD went on to do A level and a degree in History. Typing was the way forward for both of them. DS struggled with it though so I'm not sure it was a good choice for him.

Both did Art and Music and DS did Media Studies which he absolutely loved.

Thank you, he does love History so maybe we should re look at it. He can type and has been told he can use a laptop in class, but he has to be faster than he is currently and do you think he will practice!!!

Friend's child chose IT, and did very well with it.

Son who is dyslexic did MAths, English, Triple Science, Geography, History, DT and Philosophy and Theology at GCSE - got 3 A8 and 6 at A.

Now doing Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Geography AS levels. Hopes to read medicine at uni.

He struggled with MFL and although the school usually did at least one he was allowed to drop MFL at GCSE hence only 9 GCSEs rather than 10.

Not trying to stealth brag (honest) but just to show dyslexia does not need to hold you back but it does require hard work and determination.

Wishing your son all the best.
