Asking maths teachers: does the new GCSE coming in Sept replace GSCE Further Maths as A level prep?

I have read with interest several times here that high ability students are well advised to do GCSE Further Maths in addition to normal maths in order to have an easier transition to A level; and that not to have it will place them at a disadvantage or even cause them to struggle.

My DC's school does not offer further maths; I have no idea how common it is not to offer it (and would be interested to know). I had been going to ask in school about it, but our recent info evening on GCSE options told us that there was increased content in the new maths GCSE, for which extra maths timetabling for everyone was required.

I am wondering - does the extra content bridge the gap between GCSE and A level in the same way that the Further Maths does? If you had a child who definitely wants to do Maths A level and is thinking of Maths at uni, is the Further Maths GCSE or at least some extra tutoring still advisable?

ok, that makes sense. Thank you! I've only taught EdExcel and OCR GCSEs (and the latter for only two years) so that would explain why I haven't heard of it.

The INSET we had was with someone who isn't on the exam board but was a teacher following it all closely and giving us his best estimate of what would happen. So what you say about calculus makes sense in the context of what he told us.

I've never had to teach matrices but I get to next year as I will be teaching Further Maths AS for the first time, yay!

almost word for word what his maths teacher told me last week

that wasn't me! Grin Obviously his maths teacher is better placed to judge your DS's ability than me and seems to think he can cope.

What's the online programme? There are loads of videos and resources around these days so if your DS finds something he gets on with, then you might be able to save your money. Mrbartonmaths, Corbettmaths, Hegartymaths are all good.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Some really helpful insights here.

I wish I could relax and leave everything to DC's school, but reading on Mumsnet of other schools doing extra stuff to prepare their children leaves me feeling so anxious … thanks to Roisin for the reassuring words, but can't help worrying that my laid back boy is going to find life hard later when he realises how much better prepared other kids are.

I am asking myself now why they don't do Further Maths - they are a big school (230 intake per year) and a maths specialists school … seems really odd that they don't. I just checked the A level results, but they only give A* - C grades, so can't judge if they come good in the end.

My ds is in year 8 and his level in maths is 7b. Today we did a GCSE past paper and he can do most all the questions.
I did my GCSEs in Spain and in year 10 we studied how to calculate limits, vectors, trigonometry, log, ..
This is an example of a maths exam for year 10( it is in Spanish)
