Burlington Danes

My DS has been offered a place at Burlington Danes for September. He is the only boy from his primary school going there. He really wanted to go to Holland Park. I know it's an outstanding Ark Academy and has been transformed from what it was ten years ago, but can anyone tell me anything positive from their actual experiences of the school that I can pass on to my son to reassure him he will be happy there?

My child is in year 11 at Holland Park and it has not been a terribly happy experience. She will be going to Burlington Danes for Sixth Form. In contrast to HPS, BDS looks like a school where the pupils are the most important thing not the leadership/building. There is work on display from the kids, there is a piano (under cover) and football tables in the playground - they would not have that in a million years at Holland Park as it would damage the aesthetic lines of the freaking building.

I was really impressed with the teachers and kids we spoke to. I also liked the fact that the kids were allowed to banter and be kids, not scared into silence as at HPS. Honestly the first day at HPS they are lined up in the playground and shouted at - more like joining the army. Your DS has had a lucky escape.

Hi Daffodilsix,
Firstly, we'd like to congratulate your son for getting a place at the academy.
We understand how daunting it can be for new students starting at a school when they've been so used to having their friends around. You're son will be made to feel extremely comfortable and will definitely have the opportunity to meet and make lots of new friends. We do pride ourselves in offering the best for our students academically, but we're so much more than that.
The sense of community created within the school is mostly down to the students themselves, who come from all walks of life. This is definitely a place where the voice of your child matters - we encourage them to speak up and come up with suggestions that will make the transition into a secondary school a smooth and enjoyable one.
It would be easy to talk about how great the academy is, but we believe there'd be no better way to get a feel of the environment without coming to experience it yourself. As such, we'd love to invite you and your son to come and have a look around and get a tour of the school. After which, any questions you have will be happily answered by our student tour guides, or members of staff Smile

@Esko,
Given how competitive it is to gain a place at BDA Sixth Form, we're delighted to have your daughter join us. Rest assured she'll be in the best hands throughout her duration here Grin

Thank you both for your hugely helpful responses.
Esko – that's very reassuring that you were so impressed by the school (and comforting that you've chosen BDA over HP).
ArkBDA. That's really kind to take the time to reply. I am sure my son will enjoy making new friends. I will get in touch and come and have another tour with my son before he starts. My DS's father loved the school when he looked round and always said it would have been his first choice.
