We are very fortunate that my ds has been offered a place at wilsons school, sutton. was just wondering if anyone else in south east london/penge area, also going and how you intend to get there. or if anyone already there and know of best, safest way to travel.

Thanks

You can get to Waddon and Wallington via train from Norwood Junction (you used to be able to from Sydenham too, but I've not lived in the area since the Overground so I don't know how it has affected the routes). I would probably explore those options. The advantage is also that you're going against the flow of humanity so your DS is likely to get a seat in the morning!

Thanks LBOCS, yes can get 2 x trains then a walk, already losing sleep about ds doing that, thanks for reply

I am also stressing about the journey from the Wimbledon.

Is it not just the tram from Wimbledon?

Hopefully, when they start at wilsons will be able to find out if any other boys live in similar areas, then they can go together, safety in numbers, would save me a few grey hairs as well

Hi OP- as you might be able to tell from my name, I'm not far from you! Congrats to your DS.

My DS has also been offered a place at Wilson's and it's the commute that is my concern too. DH did the WCGS, Wilson's and st olaves exams with DS by public transport to get a feel, and Wilson's is by far the fiddliest for us!

So far, it will be Train from crystal palace (sometimes have to change at Norwood junction, some straight thru) to Waddon and walk. Or 450 bus from CP straight to school, but takes 50-60 min at that time I think.

How does your DS feel about it all? Mine walks by himself to our local primary, so I have tried to foster as much independence as I can, but he is such a dreamy child I am imagining him looking up from his book and finding himself in Dorking...

Congratulations to your ds too sydenhamhiller. Is good to know boys from this neck of the woods going.
My ds has been chauffered around like a lord for all of his school years, but he is very keen to have more independence.
I think what we will do initially is go with him and try a few different options, such as 157 bus or train and walk, see which is easiest.
Maybe we could keep in touch and nearer the time try and sort something out. If that is ok with you i can send you my email, if i can work out how to do that.
I must say, first day on mumsnet has been very reassuring, far more than my dh has achieved on this matter.

My son is in year 7 at Wilson's and we live in SW19. From Wimbledon most boys go on the tram to Waddon Park and then get the 455. My son cycles to Morden and gets the 157 straight to the school.

The first few days of them travelling by themselves is nervewracking for mums, but they soon find a whole bunch of boys to travel with. He loves the independence.

My son's journey is about an hour door to door and he does wish he had a shorter journey. He hates getting up at 6:30am and in the Winter leaving home in the dark. He does like the school though.
