GCSE 'results' this week (March '15).

Anyone else awaiting results this Thursday? I am mildly anxious but I don't know why and I don't even know what an F or an A would actually mean at this stage. Think I might be doing the 'benign neglect' parenting style in an even more pronounced fashion than usual, is there anyone out there who has been paying more attention than me?

Anyway, I am Losty, my pfb will be getting his first GCSE grades on Thursday for triple sciences (which should be OK ish) and English which is more of a concern. He has dyspraxia which affects his handwriting badly but is normally very good at science, good at English too but no one can read his handwriting Grin. Started using a laptop this term so hopefully after this it shouldn't be such a concern. Anyway, good luck to the lot of them!

Should also say we are in Wales although he has done science and english in the English language unlike his other exams which will be in Welsh.

Tbh, I didn't know any results were out this week!

Good Luck to your DS, Lost. Hope he gets the results he wants. When did he sit the exams?

LostInWales · 02/03/2015 14:49

The exams were January, straight back from Christmas holidays which seemed mean to me! I think it's a new way of making the courses assessed continuously instead of cramming it all for an exam at the end of two years (like I did) and the more recent system where there was coursework (and lots of people cheated! I think, don't sue me!). I don't even know what results he wants. Trying not to crowd him whilst making sure he does work. Wish I had a newborn again instead some days!

I often think that!

Grin

Well I can't be the only one with GCSE result's this week can I

er....
Is it a Welsh thing?
When ds was doing GCSEs, he had some modules in the Spring, but this year (dd is taking hers) I thought it was a new thing that all exams were in the Summer only ? Confused

LostInWales · 02/03/2015 17:20

Umm...I remember my friends children doing it last year and maybe the year before but of course they are all here in Wales! I am going to have more of a google.

Well that's it, if no one else on MN knows what I'm talking about that has to be a world first and I am officially going out of my mind Grin. Great, that means I don't have to worry about results Wink.

You are unique, LostInWales! But do come back and tell us how your Ds did!

LostInWales · 02/03/2015 21:07

We'll see how he does! I have another mum in my village who is waiting for her daughters results too so I'm fairly sure I'm not losing the plot...

No January exams in England any more OP as we have moved to linear GCSEs with all exam now taken in May/June. For some reason Wales still has retained the old modular system where they can take parts of the course over the course of 2 years.
A/A would be the highest grades and it is (officially) a pass from grades A to G. But he will need at least grade Cs in English and Maths to continue further. If he doesn't manage Cs this time round he should be able to resit in May/June.

thegreylady · 03/03/2015 11:51

I marked AQA in January in England (English Language 1H).

LostInWales · 03/03/2015 13:28

Well that just shows that a) I am not going completely mad and b) the system has just got itself all confused!

Thank you for the info about grades catslife, good to know he can resit if necessary although I hope it won't be. I know he has more exams in different subjects in summer but didn't know about re-sits. He's also got a 'half' GCSE coming up in summer in RE then if he passes he will do the full one next year, if he fails he re-sits the half one, very big on RE round here and everyone has to do it!

It was a lot simpler back in my day, although whether it was fairer to just have one exam to show your two whole years work I don't know. Never mind, only 11 more years and I'll have got them all through this and only have uni to worry about. Does anyone have gin?

greylady it's not available for new candidates in England for GCSEs. Usually when the exam system changes there are "legacy" papers so that pupils who have taken the exams in recent years can resit.
iGCSE exams can also still be taken in January

Feellikescrooge · 03/03/2015 18:46

Expecting iGCSE results for Thursday , very nervous but know we made the correct decision for the pupils. Good luck everyone!

LostInWales · 03/03/2015 18:50

Yay, hello! Are you a teacher or a parent? I need to know more, what's an iGCSE? Sorry, we are in a very rural area so the choice is 'what the school does' or 'tough' so I have learned to go with the flow and just get on with it!

OP posts:
thegreylady · 03/03/2015 23:25

Yes it is iGCSE that I mark. It was a very low entry in January and I believe 2016 will be the last January exam for that paper. Most candidates take it in June.

LostInWales · 05/03/2015 22:05

A B B D in Biology/Chemistry/Physics/English. Still not sure what that actually means or what to do. Can he resit English? He was supposed to have a laptop but they hadn't got everything in place so his hands got tired and I cannot imagine his handwriting was legible by the end (dyspraxia/hyper mobile, sorting it out even though diagnosed nearly 10 years ago is a slow moving vehicle). Anyway, that was underwhelming Grin he is happy so I am happy (well not about the English but we won't tell him Ok?)
