National Insurance number for 16yo if you're not claiming child benefit

Hi.

Does anyone know the procedure - all HMGov website says that a child will automatically get sent their NI number before their 16th birthday. We don't claim child benefit though so will that be why my daughter, 16 in December, didn't receive it?

Of course it says you can phone, and I will after the weekend, but thought someone here might know.

TIA.

No NI number has nothing to do with Child Benefit. They should get their number automatically at 16 if they are registered at birth in the UK. If she was registered abroad then that could be the reason why she hasn't received it. Best to phone them if she doesn't get it in the next few months.

Actually the data for NI numbers is sourced from child benefit applications not birth registration. However I don't think this should be affecting you now as presumably you registered for CB in the past? Ring up and ask, the letter may just be lost in the post.

I got a letter yesterday to fill in and return to get a NI number for my son. He is 16 in 12 weeks and we don't claim child benefit.
Unfortunately I have completed it and posted it so can't give you any contact details from it but I certainly don't think you should wait any longer.

Nolim · 07/02/2015 11:32

Watching with interest. We have never registered for cb.

ds is 17. He didn't receive a notification of his NI number but, when he was working last summer, his employers were able to request it from HMRC for him via their payroll system. It was very quick - came back within 24 hours.

Pinkje · 07/02/2015 12:28

Thanks everyone.

The thing is we're not at the address we were at when we last claimed benefit, which was before moving abroad.

I'll get in touch with them then, just hope I don't get the 45 minutes wait on the telephone like the last time I called (HMRC though).

I'll let you know what happens.

was your child born in the UK?
the school registration / exam records may well pick her up

Rosieposy4 · 07/02/2015 21:08

There is an address on the website to write to,( I think there is not an online option) if you have lost the NI number. When DS hadn't had his several months after he turned 16 I wrote to that and a few weeks later they replied with his number.

Pinkje · 08/02/2015 00:04

Thanks Rosie. I'll do that then.

Thanks all. Spoke to them today and they are sending us a form. We just had to answer some security questions. Even though we hadn't told them our final address overseas they knew it - wonder how that can be?

For others reading (this may not be useful to the OP!) you can register for CB and opt not to receive payment. We did this when we were only claiming for 1 child, and started receiving payments again when we were claiming for 2 as it was worth it for us then.

If you are registered for CB then you get your NI contributions paid for your state pension while you're a SAHM (possibly only up to a certain age).

I think it's worth being in the system, IYSWIM.

hmrc says:

Will I get a National Insurance number automatically?

The only people who are automatically registered are those under 16 years old, who live in the UK and for whom Child Benefit is in payment. They are automatically registered and a National Insurance number card sent to them just before their 16th birthday.

If these young people do not receive a card they will have to apply for a National Insurance number in the same way as everyone else. See earlier question â??When do I apply for a National Insurance numberâ??. This means they must be working or claiming benefit and satisfy the conditions shown above.

Nolim · 10/02/2015 20:03

Thanks pixie

Medoc · 10/02/2015 20:20

So if you've never claimed it, your children don't get an NI number?
And they can only get one if they get a job?
erk....

How would HMRC claim the tax due on any income (e.g. from savings and investments)?
My children may not work until 22 or 23 or so if they go straight from school to university.

Nolim · 10/02/2015 21:12
