Independent Schools: What did your DC wear to interview?

Hi all-- thought I'd start a new thread on this as it's a bit more shallow than other points being discussed. DD had interview this w/e at Alleyns and quite shocked at the varying levels of outfits - from v. scruffy track suit bottoms and uggs all the way up to school uniforms. We have one interview left as it's a school day she'll be in uniform, but wondering what other dc's wore on non-school day interviews.

DS's interview was on a non-school day and we were specifically told to wear non-uniform. Son (and most other boys) wore chinos of various colours, t-shirts or polo shirts and the obligatory hoody! Shoe wise canvas shoes such as vans or smartish trainers were the norm. Girls were a bit more inventive but what I would call smart casual. (Wow, just realised I sounded like Miranda's mum there!)

Always uniform, and Sunday Best uniform at that! The last school we visited they actually requested that DS a wore his uniform as pupils who had attended the school previously would instantly recognise them and it was so true, the first class room we went into a L6 girl came straight up and spoke to boys and it made all the difference, they immediately relaxed and enjoyed the visit.

Would never send a child to an interview in a hoody. Seems a really odd choice to me

As I said we were specifically told no uniform and pretty much every boy wore one. Didn't go against my DS. We had our offer last week!

Linked prep school kids wore uniform (as they were, presumably, going back to school afterwards). Non prep kids, like my dd, wore whatever they liked - she chose black jeans and a jumper. The other girl in her group did likewise, and the boy wore jeans and a t-shirt.

Thankfully, its not the sort of school that judges on clothes - the sort that does would worry me. But I think clean and presentable, as per 'best' for 10-11 year olds, is fine as a rule.

Oh - but on the test day, dd wore uniform as she was going back to school. Basically, whatever is practical and presentable!

DD wore jeans, t-shirt and beanie hat (!) for her interviews (unless uniform was specified) and said that a school which judges appearance rather than substance is not right for her. I did not get a say in the matter Smile. May be risky but at least one teacher was very positive after the interview commenting how she loved the beanie...

We were told not school uniform. DD went in her own choice of outfit of lettings with shorts over the top, and her favourite Hunger Games T-shirt. It was something she felt comfy in and was very much her

I did make sure the leggings were new ones with no holes in

She got an offer :)

yellowdaisies · 04/02/2015 11:38

leggings not lettings, obviously

Uniform for those on a school day.

For the one on a Saturday, it was a naice sweatshirt, with chinos and (probably) Converse.

DD wore school uniform as it was a school day and she was only there for a couple of hours.

DS was specifically told not to wear uniform. He wore smartish trousers and a shirt with a collar. I was a bit gobsmacked to see a couple of kids wearing "posh" school uniform (shorts, long socks, ties, blazers, school caps - it was a primary school) when the letter was so explicit for them not to. I don't know if it was an attempt to "namedrop" but those kids didn't get in (or at least never started there).

My DD is at a state primary. She wore jeans and a t-shirt to the exams, but her school uniform to the interviews.

The exams were all on Saturdays, except for CLSG which was on a Friday. She still wore jeans and a t-shirt to that one. The interviews were all on school days so she wore her uniform- which is covered in badges even though she goes to a state primary. Grin My husband and I tried to persuade her to at least be choosy about which badges to wear, but she wouldn't hear of it. She is 10 years old and takes her badges very seriously. I doubt the interviewers did though, he he.
